Name of Dairy-Free Cheese?

DS has had pretty bad rash since he was born, and just yesterday figured out it's probably reaction to milk/dairy. (We had suspected, since DD and I can't have dairy. We should have figured out when he reacted badly to the milk based formula they gave him in the hospital, but that's neither here nor there now.) Anyway, DH and I went out to get some non-dairy milk and cheese, but the only cheese we found was Veggie Shreds shredded and the same brand of sliced cheese, which has milk in it. : There are 2 more stores we can look at, we didn't today because the weather is bad, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of cheese that doesn't have milk in it, like a name/brand, that maybe if I can't find it on the shelf, I can ask around for? I'm so bummed since we found out, I do *so* love my cheese.

The only one remotely edible I've tried is Vegan Gourmet. It's awful cold, but is okay melted. It's soy-based, though, so not low allergen.

The rice ones have casein, which is from milk, but some folks can tolerate it.

Sorry, but there really aren't any great cheese substitutes.

And keep in mind that many kids who are allergic to dairy are also allergic to soy, so I definitely wouldn't start replacing all your dairy with soy products.

For a cheese sauce, you could try chreese.

My youngest dd does not tolerate cow, but she does LOVE goat and sheep cheese. I know not all can tolerate, but she does.

Vegan Gourmet Follow Your Heart, is the full title for that cheese. As pp said, it's soy based, so not low allergen.
You might want to check out this site for some dairy subs.

The Follow Your Heart is my favorite, but VeganRella is pretty decent too. It's rice based and has oat in it, but I'm pretty sure it's soy free. The other rice "cheeses" pretty much taste like raw flour to me.

i just looked up vegenrella. it is soy & dairy free. How did I miss this??

If/when we trial oats, i might give this a shot. cool.

We haven't found one yet that's any good. The last one Vegan something, stained dh's hands when he was making a grilled cheese with it! And they all taste a little different.

I've just discovered nutritional yeast and my 6 year old's loving it! He has really missed cheese so this helps alot.

Tofutti brand cheeses are 100% dairy free, but obviously contain soy.

What on EARTH is the purpose of a "non dairy cheese" that contains casein? I have yet to figure it out. If you keep kosher and want a "cheese" you can use with meat products, it's useless. If you're vegan or an ovo-vegetarian, it's useless. If you're allergic to milk, it's useless. Who on earth actually buys these things? Clueless vegans who don't realize they contain milk products?

I've never tasted a cheese substitute that's worth eating- although the Tofutti American Slices are nice to have once in a while melted onto turkey burgers (for my kosher cheeseburger! ) I've found it much more satisfying to simply eliminate the cheese in a recipe than to try and replicate the taste or texture. Tacos are yummy with meat, beans, salsa, and guacamole. Pizza is OK with lots of veggies and no cheese substitute.

A lot of the "non dairy" cheeses are sold to people that are lactose intolerant. I also know several people worried about cholesterol that believe soy "cheeses" like Soya Kaas are better for their heart health. Clearly, there are a lot of folks buying them, Soya Kaas has been around since the 70's.

I don't know, but I know at least 2 people that think it helps them.

My personal theory is that they are intolerant of cow's milk and soy cheese just lessens the intake of dairy proteins, but I've pretty much given up making that suggestion.
