What am I doing wrong? Prefold question and rash with CD's

Just started (and had to stop) using cloth diapers. O.k., probably a stupid question, but are prefolds supposed to be so soaking wet when I go to change the diaper? I even bought the more expensive, highly recommended green mountain diaper prefolds. Not sure if they are absorbing as they should. When I go to change DD, whether it's been 30 minutes or 2 hours, it seems to be completely soaked...so different than when I use the Fuzzi Bunz or Bum Genius. Is this normal?

Also, I stopped using cloth diapers this past week because they were giving DD a really bad rash. Maybe too much moisture being trapped in there against her? What can I do since I can't use the Desitin with her CD's? I re-washed everything, but maybe I am doing something wrong? I am using the special Tide that was recommended by green mountain diapers. Are some kiddos just not able to wear cloth diapers without their skin getting irritated?

IMO, there is usually some solution. What's your wash routine? Maybe they aren't getting rinsed well enough, or maybe you'll need to try a different detergent. Most places don't recommned tide...

I think some babes are just sensitive to being wet, in which case you could try using fleece liners, which will wick moisture away from the body. These also work with diaper creams to protect your dipes. You just have to wash them separately (pee ones at least - I don't like throwing poopy ones in with another load, but peed liners I will).

Doesn't sound like an absorbancy issue if the diapers are soaked - sounds like they are doing their job! Ds's are often pretty wet, depending...sounds like your dd pees a lot!

Don't give up, but don't be afraid to use sposies while you need to, to figure it out. I'm sure you'll find a solution.

I second the fleece liner idea... we can't use just a plain PF or fitted on DS without him getting a rash in about 0.2 seconds!! Now we use mostly pocket so it hasn't been an issue but the fleece liners work just as well!!

I didn't even know about fleece liners, I think I will get some of those. Thank you so much for the tips! I did the prewash, extra rinse, regular wash (hot wash, cold rinse setting). Maybe I'll try new detergent? I'm going to get back to cd'ing again next week and I sure hope that she doesn't get another bad diaper rash. Thanks again!

Tide is not a delicate choice for a baby or adult skin. Many love it and many have skin problems with it. Changing to a more delicate detergent would be my first suggestion.
Yes prefolds are soaked by the time you change them. There is little masking of fluids with natural fibers.

Because your LO is getting a rash, you might want to consider adding an extra hot or at least warm rinse to your routine to make sure you're getting all of the detergent out; and also make sure you're not using too much detergent. I have read that you should use half of the recommended amount when washing diapers.

I think you should also pursue using a completely residue-free detergent like Allen's Naturally or Charlie's Soap (which isn't soap at all, but detergent). You want to make sure the detergent is rinsing out completely if your LO is prone to rash.

i just wanted to add that there are a few things you can use for dd's rash that are safe fopr cotton diapers. you can use pure lanolin, like the kind for sore nursing nipples. or you could try california baby diaper rash cream. it's lanolin based and it work wonders for my younger dd's skin (not so much for older dd). anway, lanolin washes off in hot water, so when you wash your dipes it doesn't leave a residue. i use it everyday on my little one and we've never had a problem with her diapers which are also from GMD. HTH!
