Question for Catholics. UPDATED WITH PIC - Page 2

i have never heard of this.... crazy...

what i do know and am learning more about is that the catholic religion is a bit different in different parts of the world. so maybe their church is different then the ones here. i cant say, but i have never heard that they can 'fulfill that type of obligation' tho.

Perhaps the parents received these cards when they left their parish/church or country and misheard about the meaning of the cards? Masses would be said in their honor, but instead they apparently misheard they were relieved them of their obligation, is my guess. We are taught that we worship in community with others in church for a reason.

Too, Perpetual Enrollment cards may be given for many reasons. See http://www.stelizabethmissionsociety...ges/cards.html
I think you're right, they must have misunderstood what was told to them when they received them.

I'm going to talk to them more about it this weekend when I visit, and hopefully they can shed some light on where they got these and what was told to them. I know no one died around that time, they were married and they were already here in the U.S. with a few kids at the time those were given to them (1976), but maybe it was a gift from family or friends in Mexico as a going-away/starting a new life type of gift/blessing.

Hi there, Freud! Did you ever solve the mystery?

Well, I was at their house today for Father's Day. It was a brief visit, so I wasn't able to talk to them in depth about the meaning of their Perpetual Enrollments.

As we were leaving, I was looking at the certificates and my boyfriend's father said, "Oh, yeah, those excuse us from mass," and my boyfriend responded, "[freud] says they mean something else." I told them briefly what I "thought" they were and asked them to read the text to me, which is in Spanish. His mother read the text and then went on to explain that her aunt, who was involved in with the Franciscans, gave them to her.

Even though she read the text, which obviously just says that the Franciscan's will be praying for them at every mass, she was adamant that it also meant that they did not have to attend mass. She said, "They don't give these out to just anybody..." I looked inquisitively at her and kind of just shrugged my shoulders and said that I was pretty sure that people could buy them from any church and that I think it just means that people will be praying for them, but that it did not mean that they were excused from mass. I didn't want it to turn into a confrontation of any sort, so I just left it at that. She thinks that they are special declarations from the POPE and explained that the priest who had signed it was allowed to sign things like this on behalf of the Pope...Don't know if I could do anything else, seems like they truly do not understand what these things really are.

Freud, thanks for the update. Truly in their belief, they won't be shaken from it. But you have planted some seeds, if they choose to persue to learn more. Someday you may elect to tell them that they can buy them for others for special occasions.

Freud, I had two after thoughts.
Someday, on a special occassion for the bf's parents (a wedding anniversary, etc.) you could give them such a card. And, I was wondering to myself, why would they not want to go to church (absolved from it as they think they are) and be part of that community? God bless them and keep them.

Just read through the thread, and it sounds to me like they don't *want* to attend mass.

People who want to go wouldn't stop going because they are excused from going...like you don't stop eating dinner just because you are excused from the table...you leave the table after you stop eating and presumable, are full!
