allergy, intolerance or too much air????

my nb ds (3 wks) is having serious issues.
reminds me of dd at that age.

lots of painful gas despite frequent burping during and after feeding. we have already switched to more frequent, shorter nursing sessions.
I cut out dairy on day 2 of his life when things seemed off with him b/c dd was intolerant to dairy as a baby and dh is lactose intolerant.

anyway, I'm just trying to make things better for my little guy...he is in obvious pain and screams inconsolably for variable periods (sometimes even WHILE nursing) at different periods of the day...it doesn't ever seem consistent though evenings do seem to be more of a problem.

part of me thinks it's my milk supply/let down which is over abundant and I have a very rapid let-down, as a result he chugs and I can hear him taking in air...his latch seems good though. if this is the problem, I could try letting dd nurse first but I would like to avoid this if possible as I am at a limited nursing schedule with her and I would like to keep it that way.

BUT

another part of me thinks something is going on allergy/intolerance wise aside from the dairy. he has at least one lime green poop every day...sometimes several. he has a diaper rash around his anus that I cannot get rid of despite trying different creams, different diapers etc. he has had congestion going on for almost 2 weeks. he did catch a cold the whole family had when he was 1 week old, which I had initially blamed all the above symptoms on...but we have all long gotten over said cold and his congestion seems to come and go along with the other symptoms (save the rash...which gets slightly better but has never gone away).
I have soy, eggs and wheat every day but again...I have them EVERY day and his symptoms don't seem consistent with my intake of those foods...would that be normal if it were one of them causing the problem. where else would be a likely place to look?

sorry this has rambled...I'm at a loss...just want to stop ds's pain and my exhaustion.

Dairy and soy are the 2 most common allergens for babies. I would maybe start by taking out dairy and soy 100% (watch for hidden ingredients.) Take them out for a minimum of 3 weeks, and then you can trial each one to see if it causes a reaction. When you remove a food for a while and then reintroduce, the symptoms will usually be more obvious. If you don't see improvements, then I would take out eggs, then gluten.

I would also start a detailed food diary- write down everything you eat, and every symptoms that she has. That will make it a lot easier to spot patterns.

ETA: I don't know much about oversupply, but it could definitely be contributing to symptoms as well. Are you block feeding? (That's about the extent of my knowledge... hopefully someone else will chime in.)

Sounds like it could be oversupply, allergies, or both (we had both). For oversupply, try block feeding on one side for each feeding, then moving to one side for 2 feedings and so on if it doesn't control the issue. You can also feed on one side for a certain number of hours if that is easier for you. I got one of those rubber bracelets that help you remember when you last fed, on what side, and at what time. I had to go up to feeding for 12 hours per side before my supply declined but you want to go up slowly so you don't reduce your supply too much. You should find lots of info on it on the breastfeeding forum (it was really helpful to me when I went though this 8 months ago).

Also, my understanding is green foamy poop is more indicative of oversupply (foremilk/hindmilk inbalance) while mucousy poop is more indicative of allergies/intolerances. But a lot of the issues (gas, fussiness, arching back, screaming) can occur with both issues.

Could be all three.

DD had/has dairy allergy, reflux, and I also think gluten intolerance (newly discovered). I had oversupply/overactive letdown also. Oversupply/OALD can definitely cause tummy trouble and reflux. In additon to block feeding, I tried to feed reclined so that DD had to work against gravity to get milk, but easier said than done. Kellymom.com has a great article with other suggestions. One idea is to express a little before feeding so LO does not have to deal with the let down. Same idea as having your older child nurse first, only don't have to interrupt her weaning. I dont know if it is practical (with another child) or adviseable (re: oversupply) for you to pump and feed but DD did much better feeding from bottle when DH had her b/c flow was regulated. If there is an experienced lactation you could consult that would be great. It never worked for us, I found that pumping kept my milk supply from regulating, so we suffered through many months until that happened.

DD had silent reflux, just urped and swallowed back down, usually did not spit up. For us congestion went hand in hand with the reflux, even now at 16 months.

Her poops were like pesto or thawed frozen spinach, typical of dairy allergy. Once I eliminated dairy, it took about 6 weeks to see any real improvement, but then she did seem significantly better. I've heard it can take more than 2 weeks for dairy to completely leave your system, and then 6 weeks for your LO's gut to heal after the dairy is no longer there. Poops were better but did not look like normal BF poos until we got on a good probiotic (both me and her) and were on it for awhile.

I agree with changingseasons recommendations, that matches our experience.

so, we saw a chiropractor and she thinks it's a yeast issue...I have a yeast infection I've been battling since just after birth and the overgrowth has been there for some time I am sure...so our new theory is that it is what is affecting ds's gut, probably along with the dairy. but I also think let-down is still an issue...today I pumped a little to mix his pro-biotic into and he took the bottle with no fussing?
sigh...yeast/sugar/gluten free is no fun...though slightly more fun than ted!!!!

I would agree... that the oversupply/OALD is a factor esp. if you are noticing easier bottle feeding.

We had/have candida issues too. Did your chiro recommend a treatment?

yes..we've been doing the candida diet for about a week and I am noticing definite improvement! he still fusses during the OALD and gets some air in but if we are vigilant about burping, it seems to help a lot! man, I miss bagels though!!!

Oh, we are also both taking a probiotic (babydophilis for him) and I am also taking garlic and capryic acid...

You might want to call the company and make sure that probiotic isn't dairy derived. Most of them are.
