I really think he is doing it for a role. He strikes me as the type to throw himself into things. Best episode of Letterman though, "Joaquin wish you could have joined us". I would like to think with everything that happened with is brother he wouldn't go down the same path, so I hope this is a very big publicity stunt.

I just watched that segment on YouTube.
He appears to be on some serious drugs. My guess would be heroin. He looks terrible.

Dave dealt with it reasonably well considering the situation (OMg that Unibomber comment). It was a very awkward 10 minutes.

It was almost like he must be joking. Like he was going to snap out of it and take off the glasses and say "Just kidding, man".

The end when Dave said "Sorry you couldn't be here tonight" was totally appropriate and deserved.

He's been acting very strange for awhile now. It's not isolated to just this episode of Letterman. I remember reading that he announced he was leaving acting to become a rapper and he had written "BYE GOOD" on his knuckles and held them up at a red carpet event.
I don't think it's for a role.

It was very surreal, though.

This article states there is speculation he could be acting for an ongoing thing Casey Affleck is filming.
I hope that's the case.

I hope it is a prank. He maybe fed up with Hollywood after not getting Oscars for his really great roles in Gladiator and Walk the Line. I loved his performances in both movies and could not understand why he did not get Oscars for these. I hope this is just a rebel act. He is so talented. It would be so sad if it was drugs.

I caught part of it, but had to turn the channel because it was so bizarre and awkward.

Ok I just watched it online. I have to say the VERY end he flashes this grin to Letterman...that looked sincere...so I'm going to vote it's a part of a big well choreographed hoax.

Let's hope...right???

If you watch it closely (as I just did on YouTube) there are a couple times when he starts to smile then forces it down. He's totally acting.

Andy Kaufman did a similar thing too.

I loved Dave's comment, "My apologies to Farrah."

Could you help me out? What was that about?

Thanks!

I thought it was funny... but I will hope for it to be a stunt also... it would be horrible if he were that far off.

Oh, and "hip hop" is the kind of music he is going to do??? That is the big giveaway to me, that this is a joke. That would be about the last thing I could see him singing.

google farrah and letterman...watch the interview, it's from 1997 and it's ummmm interesting. She appears to have a higher shoe size than IQ.

But it *does* pale in comparison to Mr. Phoenix.

I really think this is a hoax/he is faking it.
