Convertible Gloves

I was wanting to make a gift for my FIL and his wife, and was thinking about convertible gloves. But then all the patterns I saw have the thumb as not convertible. Are they helpful with just having the 4 fingers exposed? Should I just go ahead and make mittens or gloves? I guess this is just an opinion question, but I'm debating what I could knit for a gift, so it's here

I saw a project over there where someone combined a tipless glove and a fold back mitten to make convertible gloves. They were very cool. I think one of the yarns was Orbit or Galaxy something (thatś all I remember, sorry).

I think they're cool too, I was more just wondering if they were actually useful or not?

I think they would be helpful. My three year old has a pair of fleece ones that he loves. (I found them at Target almost a month ago end of winter clearance for about $2.00)
