Race to Witch Mountain

Did anyone else catch the commercial for this during the Super Bowl a week or two ago? It was one of the ones that really stood out to me because it appealed to everybody in the family....with the action and comedy and the kids with the superpowers. And the Rock

Ohhh...Dwayne Johnson. He makes my loins quiver. I'd gladly watch him do almost anything--besides wrestling. So Race to Witch Mountain is high on my list.

Gosh, I loved the original movie when I was a kid. I used to drive my mother crazy with it.

LOL Dwayne Johnson is definitely a draw for me too! I like him in action movies and I like him in comedies and he gets to do both here

Can't say for sure about Winkie the cat, but I do know that the original Tia & Tony (Kim Richards & Ike Eisenmann) will be making appearances in this version. Nice to pay homage to its predecessors!

I loved those movies when I was kid. It's funny, cause about a year or so ago dh and rented the first one from netflix for dd and OMG, it was so bad. LOL. As a kid though I thought it was the best. Can't wait to see this new one.

I used to drive my mom nuts pretending to be Tia.

They are offering this locally for special needs kids next month. They only charge $6 so I'm thinking of attempting it with ds.

Kali - That would be really cool!

Yeah, I think this one won't be as...cheesy as the original version. It looks to be more slick and action-oriented, but still won't scare the kids

For any of you Rock (gosh, I still refer to him as that - I meant, Dwayne Johnson!) fans, here's a behind-the-scenes clip of him w/ the director & kids. He seems like such a cool guy

I couldn't stand Dwayne Johnson in Game Plan, but I loved him in Get Smart, so I'm intrigued.

Aww! Add me to the rest who loved these as a kid. :

I forgot to find out when the autism society is hosting this movie! Off to call right now.

The movie opens tomorrow and it's been getting some pretty good reviews! Sounds like it'll be a really good family movie, in every sense of the word "Disney"

Variety says:
Quote:
Smartly positioned for maximum potential as a breakout spring hit with cross-generational appeal, "Race to Witch Mountain" is the sort of full-throttle crowd-pleaser capable of grabbing even teen and twentysomething ticketbuyers who normally avoid anything that smacks of "family entertainment." There's something for almost every demo here -- including baby-boomers with fond memories of the original Disney-produced "Witch Mountain" pics of the 1970s -- and the entire package is impressively propelled by the star-powered, likably comic-macho perf by Dwayne Johnson (formerly known as the Rock). Expect strong B.O. numbers, even stronger homevid sales and very early talk of a possible sequel.
THR says:

So it can be done. "Race to Witch Mountain" is a film from Walt Disney Pictures that doesn't play like a family film manufactured by the Disney machine. It plays, in fact, like a sci-fi action adventure that genre fans of all ages will recognize as such. It doesn't mind PG-rated violence, scary moments or even death threats issued by bad guys -- and good.More importantly, it's entertaining with a crafty mixture of action, humor and drama. Coming on the tripped-up heels of a mediocre concert movie featuring a youth band lacking in spontaneity, "Witch Mountain" goes a long way toward re-establishing Disney's grasp on a youth market that seemed to be slipping away from the studio. Boxoffice should be strong well into Easter weekend.
AND it sounds like fans of the original won't be disappointed by this re-imagining, which is always a plus. Definitely looking forward to this one now!

I loved those movies as a kid, too. Adding Dwayne Johnson is definitely a plus for me - I want to try to see it this weekend.

So I didn't realize this, but the movie's opening coincides with the re-release of the DVD's for Escape and Return to Witch Mountain. Neat - so I can watch the original two before watching this one I really like that with this movie, Disney is still appealing to fans who remember the original so well but keeps in mind what kids like today. I'm really interested in checking this out!

You guys gotta let me know what you think of the movie. We can swap reviews

Also - I found out when I was reading reviews about the movie that Kim Richards, who played Tia in Escape & Return, is Paris Hilton's aunt! LOL Things you learn every day....

I always have a sneaky suspicion that they do that on purpose so parents will buy the originals thinking it's the movie their kids have been begging to see.

I loved the originals, although I don't think I've ever seen them all the way from beginning to end. We weren't allowed to watch them growing up because of one of the words in the titles. Guess what word! I wasn't allowed to watch smurfs or care bears either. My mom was weird.

We should be going to see it Saturday morning. I doubt ds will sit through the whole thing so I think his father and I will take separate cars so that I can stay if ds gets antsy.

We can't wait to see it. The kids (3 and 6) comment every time the previews come on, and my partner and I are excited too. We have too much to do tonight and tomorrow, but I'm hoping Sunday . . .

What did you guys think of the movie?? I enjoyed it - I thought it was definitely a good family movie. It was action-packed enough to keep everybody interested - but it wasn't tooo scary (maybe some parts were a little much). And Dwayne Johnson was most definitely pleasing to the eye And I really liked the some of references they made to the original, as well as the cameos by Kim & Ike.

We didn't go.

Me too! It was a religious thing for us--I'm guessing you were probably brought up the same denomination as I was.
