Nestle boycott -- a question...

After the recent Nestle boycott post, I did more research on it and came up with what I've known already thus far. So maybe someone can help me out...

The reason there is such a big boycott of Nestle (more so than other formula brands?) is because they were promoting them in underdeveloped countries. Correct? I am aware of the reasons why this is harmful, that I don't need explained. Just need some clarifying...

does this mean that other formula companies do not market in underdeveloped countries at all?? That Nestle really was the only one to do it? No one else has ever tried to do it?
Or is there some other issue dealing with Nestle that I don't know about?

i think it's because nestle is the only formula company that also makes food products. if you want to boycott enfamil, for example, just don't buy enfamil. there was a bigger reason about 30 years ago, but i thinks it's beyond that by now. nak or i'd put more details.

I think this http://www.babymilkaction.org/ is a very good source for understanding the boycott. It is much larger than Nestle and is about violators of the WHO Code.

HTH.

My understanding is that originally, Nestle was the most egregious offender.
They are also the largest target, as in, if they can't get away with it, the smaller companies will be less likely to try.

As far as I can tell, they're still the largest and most egregious offender.

BTW, formula itself is not part of the boycott. If a mom cannot breastfeed, baby must be fed something, and modern formula is at least closer than straight cow or goat or just about any other milk--unless you've got a lactating mare in your backyard.

: They do not abide by the Code, and have insidious marketing practices both in rich and poor countries. They spend tonnes of money figuring out how to get mothers not to breastfeed.

They are also boycotted because of their bottled water harvesting practices.

Plus as the PPs said, they make a huge range of products, so there is much to avoid, and hopefully a larger economic impact of a boycott.

They are SOOOOOO hard to avoid. It seems like everytime I check the brands lists theres more products that I buy! Its so frustrating! :

I am glad I came across this because I was just going to post the same thing. I am a pretty big user of their espresso coffee and am of course willing to boycott, but first want to be convinced of the reasons. Sadly, if you want to boycott every big company that is involved in unethical practices, you are going to have a hard time eating these days, or doing anything else

Mamajake has posted the Baby Milk Action site already. I'll add the Nestle Boycott specific page:
