I don't know any preemie that hasn't had a bottle.
Mine didn't. Actually, at the hospital he was at the breast-fed preemies didn't get bottles. It was all tube to boob.

I'm haven't been in on MOD for a couple of years, ever since I tried to join the committee but kept getting the brush off. I made it to one committee meeting but after that I couldn't get a single person to return my calls or emails.

I've been doing the MOD walk for years. My twin boys were preemie in 2002.

So yep, doing the MOD walk this year as well. Don't have much at all raised, but it's some, so that's good.

Having a preschool aged child at home, my husband at work & my preemie in the NICU for over 2 months, made it impossible to have 100% of feedings at the breast.

Our NICU had a 30 minute per day sibling policy. Which meant 1 morning feeding could be at the breast.

You couldn't sleep over so all night time feedings couldn't be at the breast.

Babies needed 48 hours of no tube feedings before they were eligible for discharge.

So how else should she have eaten? Syringe or cup was a no no as she needed to be able to suck, swallow, breathe.

Even then she needed fortified milk a few times each day & still does.

Not every preemie is the same.

.

I think that people often forget this. We tried to go from tube to breast, but it didn't work. And I was able to stay there almost 24/7 trying to nurse, but my dd just couldn't do it. Plus when we didn't fortify her milk she started to lose weight. Add to the fact that she would continually pull her feeding tubes out and then send her monitors crazy when they tried to re-insert them, I just opted for the bottle.

You're lucky that your hospital allowed siblings. My NICU didn't allow children under 12 at all. My kids were allowed in once soon after my boys were born since we weren't sure if they were going to survive. When they were moved over the feeder/grower side, only kids 5 and older were allowed to visit.

At the NICU my son was in they only allowed siblings during the summer. They didn't the rest of the year.

Which would make it nearly impossible to avoid bottles, right?

I'm very pro bfing. My oldest self weaned at 29 months, & I was sad. I was hoping she'd go until at least 3, but she was & still is too much of a busy body. She never had a bottle w/ the exception of 2 days while in the NICU for jaundice, other than that she was on the breast.
