I haven't watched it yet.....

I thought it was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time, but I could see how it would not be everyone's pick. I didn't recommend it to everyone, because I know the torture scenes would really bother some of my friends.

What about the movie did you not like?

It would get my vote for Best Picture if I was a member of the academy.

I never rose above the torture. Meaning, I know the filmmakers made the choice to show that stuff and I think it was based on an article the writer read years ago. But the good that happens by the end of the film was not satisfying to me..not worth the stuff I saw earlier. If that makes sense.

my friend could NOT STAND the movie. it was v. v. v. painful for her. she went with a friend so she couldnt leave. she felt overwhelmed by it all the time. things just kept worse and worse with each scene.

the content was so painful for her - that she could not focus on it as a movie. as she described she felt emotionally whipped by the end of the movie. the end didnt matter. that such things happen and that its a reality she just could not sit through.

so no you are not the only one.

similiar to me

I haven't seen it because I knew I wouldn't be able to sit through it. So, just hearing about it, I knew I wouldn't like it.

I don't generally like movies like that (depressing) and now that I know it has torture in it, I will definitely not watch it. I cannot watch movies or tv with prison, torture, slavery or humiliation.

OK, I'll admit it : I really disliked it. But not for the reasons people have mentioned. I thought it was sooo hokey---I can't stand stupid, pat, happy endings, and slumdog's was the *worst.*

I know DH and I are alone in this, but we both just thought it was so sappy and found it really annoying.

see the thing is - what is interesting to me is - that i have gotten both sides to this movie.

and its so interesting how the response is different from immigrants from 3rd world countries - those who have actually been exposed to poverty.i come across a lot of international students at school.

so while some find it painful, some find it a v. v. inspirational movie. that someone from the slums CAN make it - in a believable manner. that you can come from the slums and KNOW the answer, through life experience. they can see beyond the poverty and suffering and see it as someone who came out of it and survived.

what is interesting is many of those who find the movie inspirational are immigrants from 3rd world countries. though not all. at least in my limited experience.

I haven't seen it but I was watching a special on it the other day and apparently there was a lot of protesting about the film in India when it first came out. The special I watched was talking about how someone from one of the slums wouldn't have been allowed on the show at all, etc.. apparently the film has gotten a bit more acceptance now though, because it has brought attention to the slum problem and also it has in sort of a weird way brought some entrepreneurial opportunities to some slums such as taking "tours" of slums, etc.

I haven't seen it yet, but I loved the book.

I walked out b/c of the torture scenes (not surprisingly, I've been told that the scene that was the deal-breaker for me was the worst of the torture, and things improved from there). I liked the storyline, I thought the cinematography was great, but couldn't hack the violence. I'll probably get it on Netflix so I can fast forward.
I haven't seen it yet. I don't do torture anymore. I fast forward through torture scenes in books, too, and if I have to skip stuff, I don't consider it good.

I liked it ok. I consider myself SA, and I know the scenes where horrible stuff happened to the kids were disturbing,(I closed my eyes!) but it really does happen quite often.

What I didn't like about it, was that it was basically a 'poverty tour'. Not all of mumbia/india is like that. There's a lot more too it, yk?

it was okay. since i watched it on tv i could ff all the parts others found offensive, so i wasnt bothered by any of that. maybe i would have been if I'd seen it in a theatre
nor did i care that it was not realistic, or that it was poverty porn (i agree that it was, but it sells, and that is what show biz is about, yes?)

but honestly, not that i have seen any of the other contendors for best picture, but really? this was the BEST??? to me a "best picture" or even a good one, is one that you want to see again at least once, and where you dont want to miss even a single minute. and it is not like i am highbrow or anything, i watch sitcoms like Friends and stuff. but this i was happy to watch in fast forward and no interest in re-watching it.

BUT if it werent for all the hooplah, i'd just say it was an okay movie. no strong feelings for or against it. the quiz show format was clever and fairly entertaining.

ill admit it was hard to watch but from what i understand, it didnt show the worse poverty. i like the movie simply due to the awareness factor...many dont believe such poverty, and worse, happens
