Roger's sugar response

I had posted in some thread somewhere that Roger's sugar makes beet sugar and that I had emailed the company to find out how to know which sugar was beet and which was cane. I got a response today, so here it is:

Dear Jacqueline

We market our beet sugar in the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Our beet sugar under the Rogers' trademark can be identified by checking the inked jet code printed on the bag. If the code starts with the letter A it is beet sugar from Taber. If the code starts with the letter B it is cane sugar from Vancouver BC.

Good luck on you search.

So, unless you happen to be in a state bordering one of these provinces, you're out of luck for "just" hopping the border for beet sugar.

Hope it helps someone though.

Why is it so hard to track down beet sugar???

Spin off question: How hard is it to make your own? Do you need actual "sugar" beets or can you do it with any beets? (She says with a drawer full of beets in the fridge...)

I got mine online (it was in another thread). Now foods I think (sorry, it's already packed in my car). I made it into confectioners sugar this morning for frosting. It worked (don't tell my husband I used his coffee grinder!! It worked really well though. I might need to get another one just for sugar). I've never seen anywhere how to make it. The one I have said that they're not GMO beets either.

I posted a link to beet sugar on amazon, but the limiting factor there is the $10 shipping on a $3 bag of frosting.

No BC?

That's hilarious though- it the same bag of sugar, same packaging, but some is beet and some is cane? I guess it must be pretty similar stuff!

No BC. If my mom were coming sooner, I'd say I'd get her to bring a bag with her so I could send it to you, but we're not planning her visit until June or so.
Yeah, it's the same packaging and everything. You have to check the codes to find out which is beet and which cane- it's not even labeled as "beet" or "cane" on the package, just "sugar".
