Will hook/loop startle a newborn?

I know this sounds like a silly question, but I have yet to finish my NB dipes with velcro/Aplix and my midwife suggested that I use pins instead. It's been her experience that the sound of hook and loop actually startles and can wake a sleeping newborn! Thoughts?

For some reason I saw the title of this on new posts and thought you were talking about latch hook. I came here scratching my head trying to figure out what would startle a newborn about latch hook...

I used hook and loop on my newborn diapers, and it really wasn't an issue. I don't recall DD2 ever waking up because of the sound, and I found hook and loop was GREAT during those long newborn nights of frequent changes! I usually use snaps on my diapers but when you are changing so often I don't want to mess around with snaps; hook and loop is fast and easy.

My newborns were startled and woken up by the diaper change. I don't think the closure method was an issue.

Never been a problem.
We did a combination of snappied prefold, hook and loop and snaps. Like dis said, hook and loop was great during the night.

I don't change him while asleep, he wakes enough I don't need to. Sometimes if I'm too tired I'll just take his diaper off and go back to sleep till he pees on me...we sleep on raggy diapers for that and nursing leaks

I have actually found that if he's crying and hears his cover being opened, he'll immediately calm down. I've fostered happy diaper changes by only washing in water, not with wipes, and by giving him time to lay with 'froggy legs' and get really dry between changes, and play with his feet or belly for smiles. These are things he loves, so as soon as he hears the velcro he quiets or smiles and starts pulling his legs towards his tummy
