Need help with my two week old

He's currently sleeping across me so please forgive any typos...

I am afraid I have another allergic kiddo DS2 was born two weeks ago and he has developed (actually developed fairly quickly) a rash on his bum it is bright red but only right around his anus, not on his cheeks or genitalia or the front at at all. From looking up different rashes it seems like it's an allergy ring to me

He is (and has been) exclusively breastfed. He has spent a lot of his life skin to skin and when he is in a diaper he is changed super regularily, I'm constantly checking to make sure he's not wet or dirty (we use cloth fwiw). We EC the rest of the time and have him on padding for misses which is changed immediately. So far no amount of changing regularily or being open to air is helping the rash at all. It's just getting redder and some little spots on it are open/raw enough to bleed sometimes when I wipe them (we use only wash cloths and water so to not irritate it further).

I have tried three ointments on his bum, a calendula one, a zinc one, and one that we use to heal general wounds... nothing has made it worse but neither has it made it any better.

So where do I start? I'm assuming it's something in my breastmilk as anything contact related he comes into contact over his whole body and the rest of his skin is clear. I just feel so overwhelmed. I eat very little dairy (though I know if he's dairy sensitive just a little is needed), so it would be easy enough to cut that out, but what if it's not dairy? Do I cut out foods one by one? His poor bum is so terribly sore though and he screams when I touch it and I am just wanting to get him healed up as soon as I can because it's breaking my heart to see him in pain.

Sorry this is so long. I have been lurking on this forum and I am hoping to get some help from the wise people in here. Thanks in advance.

Dairy is the most common trigger for babes, so I would cut that first. I would probably also cut soy, because many dairy allergic babes have issues with soy too.

I would try taking it out of your diet for a few weeks and track any changes. Keep a food journal and write down everything you eat, and all symptoms you see.

Hopefully you will see improvements within a few days (even though dairy takes a couple weeks to completely clear your system). Hope he feels better soon.

you may also want to try to put a yeast cream on his bum to see if thats what your dealing with ... when my DD was 3 weeks she had a really red, raw bum .. and showed no other signs of yeast and to me it didnt look like a yeast rash so i didnt treat it with a medicated yeast cream, but instead used the same creams you mentioned and nothing worked ... (i had also cut out dairy from my diet for other reasons besides a rash) but rash was still there after almost 2 weeks .. so we tried a medicated yeast cream nystatin, (sp?) i think thats what its called, and after one night of it on her bum the rash was MUCH better ... and after 3 days ... voila ... NO RASH ... it wouldnt hurt to try ... good luck .. hope your ds feels better soon ...
