My older child is about to turn one. Since about eight months, she does what I can only describe as self-soothing in 90 percent of cases of her crying.
I check on her immediately when she starts fussing, even if it's just a "Hey, wassamatter?" but if she's not wet/dirty or hungry (she signs "milk" for hunger and "nappy" for wet/dirty), she fights against being picked up at first. I wait 2-3 minutes, and in that time, in 90 percent of cases, she sorts herself out and is happy again.
Is this a common developmental thing at around a year? When she started I would stay with her when she was crying, but now I find that I can leave the room and she comes following me when she's ready. My little girl is growing up so fast! (and can I just mention that I really enjoy her sorting herself out because she was a screamer for the first 3 months?)
