Varicella Vaccine

does anyone know why they call it Varicella instead of chicken pox?

Do selective vaccinaters often get this one?

I imagine that even many pro-vaxxers wouldn't get that one if they realized it was just the chicken pox ... assuming they were pro-vaxxers who also research vaccine risk and waning immunity and shingles etc.

The virus that causes chicken pox is called Varicella Zoster.

When DS 1 was little we vaxed him on schedule and I knew what varicella was. They didn't try and hide the fact that it was chicken pox. The brochure they gave me for the varicella vax had a chicken with spots on the cover. It is one that a lot of pro vaxers do skip. I skiped it with DS even though he got everything else on schedule up to 2 years. He did get one shot of the varicella vax as DH brought him for an appointment and didn't know what it was and they figured since I refused maybe they could trick him into giving it.

I think it's pretty common knowledge that varicella = chicken pox. I've never met anyone who didn't know what it is, at least.

i agree, i can't believe they dont just say "chicken pox". it's almost like they don't want people to ask questions.

none of my drs ever gave me vaccine brocures. maybes its just the area I live in. we've been to 3 different pediatric offices. I had always heard it called chicken pox growing up... but thank you for the clarification kidspiration. I guess there are NO parents out there who don't know that varicella is chicken pox... and so they are ALL vaccinating knowing that varicella is chicken pox...

:

It's federal law that docs give out a Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for every vaccine administered to your kid.

and what if they dont? so I could sue them for every vaccine given to my son and daughter? they NEVER once gave me anything like that. the first dr's office gave me a print out of what happens at every visit during the first year and what vaccines are given, but no information on vaccines themselves, and the other dr's my children saw didnt even do that much.

and as I said, it may be "common knowledge" but most parents I talk to in real life who vaccinate don't know that varicella=chicken pox.

I didn't know that varicella was chicken pox, back when I blindly vaxxed my son. Had I known, I wouldn't have let them give it to him. Although his shot had MMR and varicella. I'm so mad at myself I could kick myself for it. I was such a dummy.

At the very least you can inform them that they're in violation of federal law.

IMPORTANT: By Federal law, all vaccine providers must give patients, or their parents or legal representatives, the appropriate Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) whenever a vaccination is given.

Wow. Are they this ill-informed in all other areas of their childrens' health care, as well?

(hugs) we all make mistakes. they COULD just call it chicken pox. a lot of people blinly vax trusting the medical community and CDC and such.

I don't know. even many people who educate themselves on vaccination are ill informed. Just like some believe the information from the CDC is accurate and safe to trust, some people trust their dr's when they say vaccines are safe and don't pay any attention to what they are for. Many people don't even realize they have a choice about vaccination. I don't think that means they are ill informed in other areas, not any more so then someone who chooses to vaccinate based on blindly trusting the CDC. some blindly trust their dr's. They start solids at 4 months, give their children formula, spank because their parents spanked them. Yes, I do think lack of education plays a roll. sometimes even educated people make bad choices though.

Most people go to their doctors and look at their advice like I would going to a mechanic. "I don't understand this stuff...just do what you think is right".

Not everyone has the time or inclination to become super-informed on everything there are "experts" for, I guess. I can't really fault people for trusting expert advice.

when I was the one who didn't know that varicella was chicken pox I was not ill informed in other areas of my childrens health care.

My son was breastfed, cloth diapered, never left to CIO, we practiced safe cosleeping, we delayed solids, and fed only healthy foods. all those were educated choices. I was ill informed when we vaccinated him because I was trusting the wrong people. Now I only trust myself. I read the information presented to me, but I don't believe it blindly. I didnt really look into Varicella back then or I would have learned it was chicken pox. I know its not hard to find that information, but if you are busy looking at other things (Even other information on vaccines) you may miss the whole varicella-chicken pox thing. I think they should just call it the chicken pox vaccine - but then I think less people would get it.

looking back, I think I did know my child was being vaccinated against chicken pox (but I don't remember the varicella=chicken pox connection, it was a long time ago though) and thinking cool he wouldnt have to get chicken pox, but at that time I didnt realize all the dangers involved in vaccines, their ingredients, or the fact that this would increase the liklihood of shingles. so, not that I was ill informed necessarily, but underinformed definitely. I suppose the information I did have was bad though, in retrospect. had I been wisely informed about vaccines I wouldn't have vaccinated. That was foolish on my part.

I don't think it has always been this way. In the past, I think parents knew alot more about taking care of a sick child and did not call on a doctor unless it was serious. Now, almost everyone I know runs off to the doctor for every little thing and they are fearful over little things like fevers and coughs. Somewhere along the way things have changed for the worse (it is no wonder they fear diseases like measles if they fear a cold). I'm so glad I stopped being one of the people who just trusts the experts on something that really should be important information to know.

When I used to vax ds we went to the health department and they gave out the info sheets and the lady did refer to the chickenpox vaccine by chickenpox. Even back when I didn't have any issues with vaccines and hadn't even thought to do any research, it didn't make sense to give a chickenpox vaccine.
