Nail Polish for my girly-girl 4yo

I've been told by numerous friends now, that nail polish is totally toxic and filled with all kinds of carcinogenic toxic stuff. I believe it, judging by the smell. I never wear it myself, but my 4-year-old absolutely LOVES having painted nails. Does anybody know if there is such a thing as non-toxic non-carcinogenic nail polish and where I could get it? Or does anyone have ideas that can distract my girly pink-nail-loving preschooler from the nail polish thing and onto something more healthy that would still fill her need to do pretty girly things? Thanks for any help!

I checked the Cosmetics Database under nail care/nail polish. There are a few that are rated low. www.cosmeticsdatabase.com

The lowest one is one called Acquarella and there's lots of pretty colors but it looks like it's $18 a bottle.

Most of the other low ones seem to be clear top coats, though. (I'm not that well versed in nail polish so I can't be sure of all of them though...) I rarely wear polish, I usually treat myself to a pedicure at the beginning of the summer but then I eventually take off the polish as it chips...

Good luck! I'd love to hear suggestions from others too since my dd (6) also likes painted nails.

the last time I went to Whole Foods (it's abt an hour away, so its a destination, lol) I picked up a bottle of 'formaldehyde' free stuff. Looks like the brand is No Miss.

I was pretty suprised at just how bad it smelled- even without the formaldehyde. I don't know-- seems like it would still be pretty toxic, given the way it off gasses... but it's a step in the right direction at least.

I'll go see if its in the cosmetics database...

be back in a bit...

okay, don't see it in there

But it did list an L'Oreal one that was low risk- only registered a number 1. Seems like it'd be easy to find, too.

Suncoat makes a waterbased nail polish. I never tried it but I love their mascara and hairspray!

Thanks you guys. I think I'll try ordering a couple of the cheaper options online, and probably go look for the L'oreal quick dry stuff at the pharmacy. I'm happy that there's at least one less toxic option that we can get locally. I really appreciate the help. I hadn't seen that cosmetic safety database before, that's really neat!

I use nail polish and remover from Peacekeeper (order online). Haven't looked at the data lately but at the time I got it, I know it was supposed to be one of the more 'natural' less-toxic ones.
For the record, I absolutely LOVE it. And the nail polish remover actually WORKS!
