If you saw my son's hair you would see that his actually wasn't an easy task for us either. Their hair has very rarely been 'boy short' and is inherited from their Mexican father. Their hair is so dense you can barely see their scalp with ds1's being wavy/curly to boot. I'd still rather comb than use chemicals.

I suspect it probably only ever happens to parents, and probably not many : I think you've given me an idea for a future career, though- how DO you get started as a professional nitpicker?

Because you can't see the nits, they blend in.

We have dsd use peppermint shampoo to keep them from coming home. Schools here have a horrible problem with lice. We used to use tea tree oil, but it disrupts hormones, so we switched to plain peppermint. You can use rosemary, too. Lavender and TTO work, but they both disrupt hormones so we don't like to use them long term.

Before we found this trick, dsd and I fought them for 2 months while dh and ds didn't get them at all with their shaved heads. We use a flea comb also as the plastic lice combs weren't doing the job very well.

I'm paranoid enough to occasionally do a comb-through just to check, but so far we haven't seen anything since we started using the shampoo over a year ago. It was the only thing that killed them off after weeks of using the awful chemical stuff that didn't work.

I'm not actually sure how she got into it. Answered an ad I guess. You could search lice removal services in your area and ask if they are hiring. She used to come home with stories about being outcalled to these enormous mansions out in Ct, penthouses in Manhattan, getting $500 tips. I guess the higher the shame factor the more someone is willing to pay to make it go away.

Along the side bar, on the right are a number of lice removal services. If you wanted to take a big step, maybe contact one of them and find out if they would be interested in letting you open a franchise in your area. Also, ask at your kids school... does the school nurse do the lice check or do they hire a service. The woman I know did both under the same company. She would go to schools and do lice checks and she would go to homes and do lice removal.

Vinegar hair rinse on short hair, after combing and all that. Prevented them from coming back.
