"My Kind of Normal"

I thought many of you mamas could relate:

http://warner.blogs.nytimes.com/2009...dinary-people/

"It was a conversation about being “normal.” About how, after half a lifetime, I was suddenly coming to the somewhat troubling realization that I was, perhaps, kind of weird. And, far more troubling still, that I was raising my children to be kind of weird, too."

That makes me laugh, because, at the age of 40, I'm beginning to realize I'm nowhere near as weird as I always thought...

heh.

I am realizing that while I am not weird, I am more just flat out geeky. Within my geek tribe, I am very very normal (and pretty boring). Outside my tribe, I am a geek.

I am raising my kids to be geeks. Heck, you ask my 3 year old "how do you kill a Troll", and he will reply "With FIRE!!". My 5 year old has a favorite 6 sided die.

These are core survival skills in my world... ; )

My favorite line was:

"I am not a normal 43-year-old woman, with a nice manicure and a well-run home."

(I'll be 43 soon and that really resonated with me.)

My kids are so not normal. Ds spent part of the evening trying to make the 'th' sound without using his teeth. Why? Because he asked me why we had teeth in addition to chewing our food, and I just had to explain to him the role that teeth played in making speech sounds.

Ahh... so... Uggs for Uggly? Just my opinion though. The boots especially look weird.

And so, I’d come to learn that letting a faucet drip for months, wasting water and money while you mentally construct a new home economics curriculum for the 21st century, just isn’t, well, normal.
I thought it was normal

But seriously, one of my greatest fears in life is that DD will be a young Republican cheerleader

Well, that's kinda what I've always thought. . . . But I figured I was just out of touch with trendiness.

Uggs may be ugly but they are wicked comfy and warm!!!

I know this is totally OT but I have to say, the adds on MDC so do not reflect the MDC lifestyle (for lack of a better word.) I really wish the ads were ones I could think were vetted by MDC.

Ok - back on topic - I have always found that people who seem normal up front, get less and less normal the more I get to know them. But, maybe I just don't bother getting to know really normal people? I do admit that I find weird far more interesting than normal. And, I do enjoy a good Troll bbq

too weird for words, real life friends or forum boards?

Thanks for posting this thread. two days ago i wanted to start a thread with the title i have given here. I seem to be raising my daughters weird. this is because what is normal is actually insane itself. so, us, being the weird ones, are actually the ones operating in a sane manner... the rest will catch up, if it is like my experience with everything else, the world is about 4 years behind me... but time is changing now all the time, so maybe it will happen in a manner perceived to be sooner than that... I may still start the other thread, becasue i want to expound on it and it seems to unrelated to your article, but my computer time is almost up fo rthe day. we will see if i have time after i get back on using my phone. happy posting!

Your right... I guess that's my fault for mentioning them in the first place.

I'm definitely trying to raise geeks. ASk my 4 year old who she wants to be when she grows up and she'll tell you Eowyn because, "She's no man!"

But try to take my Uggs away from me from November-March up here and I'll introduce you to my version of Isuldur's bane.

wow look at all the ugg ads funny

The two paragraphs about the dripping faucet perfectly the way dh and I run our house. I have actually said those words to dh: "We should really know how to do this." And it did indeed result in total inaction on our part.

However, we realized long ago that we are not normal.
