My coworker/ semi-friend is pregnant with a boy, her first child. I want to encourage breastfeeding and intactness, but I don't want to come across as a know-it-all. Suggestions?

I always try to slip it in there...

Like.. circumcision usually goes like this.. btw... I am not sure if you had thought about it yet, but with a boy you obviously have to think about whether you're going to circumcise. I chose not to circumcise..and if you ever want to talk about it or wonder why, let me know cause I know that it's not the most popular choice around here...

Something like that.

At work.. breastfeeding is a little easier.. cause we have a lactation program so I give them a fyi on the lactation resources - room, reduced breast pump, etc.. I took advantage.. make sure you do if you're planning...

And in both of those ways... some people will be really educated.. some won't have thought about it.. but at the very least they know of one person that they could talk to.. or ask if they want. I've had 3 or 4 people not circumcise their kids and I was a resource to them without every really being very aggressive about it and I saved myself the grief of getting frustrated with every other person who chose to circumcise, etc.

You can make her a gift basket with some baby boy stuff with some bfing and circ pamphlets, including the new Circ Decision DVD. You can download it and burn it in a DVD for her, here is the download link:

http://vp.video.google.com/videodown...NbYvGldISCYTFg

This is a 20 min video featuring Dr. Dean Edell. Also, Steve Scott talks about the function of the foreskin, Marilyn Milos talks about the myths of circ, care of the penis and the procedure, John Travis MD talks about how much misinformation there is around doctors who do not own a foreskin, lawyer J. Steven Svoboda talks about human rights and a Nurse born in Somalia talks about the similarity of RIC to FGM which she experienced herself when she was a child. This video is very detailed and very gentle for every new parent to be of baby boys. Marilyn Milos RN herself says that every parent that have seen this video choose NOT to circ their boys

Thanks so much for doing this!! :

Send her this link and ask her what she thinks of it. That way you are essentially giving her the opportuntiy ot get a second opinion from a doctor, so you are simply coming off as a curious reader trying to sort things out thoughtfully.

I give Peggy's Natural Family Living book to all my pregnant friends. In it, she discusses the entire spectrum of NFL issues, including an excellent presentation of the case against circumcision, breastfeeding, natural birth, gentle discipline, etc. I've found it to be an invaluable resource that parents actually use and don't just pass off as random unsolicited parenting advice

That looks cool. Thanks! I think I'll do a baby basket with other gifts and this.
