Do I need a wicking layer?

I am planning to use flannel for my inserts and was wondering if I can use that for my inner layer also. Will the baby feel too wet if it is only flannel?

Are you making pockets? If so, then I'd say yes you need a wicking layer unless you can devise a way to keep the flannel from rolling out the side causing wet clothing.

Flannel itself is fine against the skin, although it does not hold as much liquid ime and therefore feels pretty wet but if you change right away it works. I have a few fitteds like this.

I dont think I'll do a pocket diaper, but was hoping to do an all in one with flaps at the front and back rather than a comletely sewn in liner. basically something that looks like this:

She uses suedecloth, but I was hoping to just use the flannel that I already have.

I made one sort of like you are descibing as an experiment, and I do have trouble at times with the inner fabric (I used bamboo) rolling out and wetting ds's clothes. If you don't want to use a wicking layer, you could always bind the whole thing with fold over elastic (FOE), because that won't wick. You could still do the doubler flaps as she shows...

For supplies, i like kidsinthegarden.com

Non wicking layers against the skin give my babies terrible diaper rash, so I only use wicking layers. That's my babies, though.
