I believe I may have Pyroluria, I did the online test and scored high, and recently found out I high high histamine.
I'm wondering if anyone has any success stories and/or information I should know about; and where the best place is to get tested?
Thanks

There was a book about this, and this place: http://www.hriptc.org/content/patientHome.php

My psychiatrist at one time also mentioned them, and I've seen them advertised elsewhere.

I think they are known as "the best" for this.

I am thinking I might have this, too (as well as several family members . . . ). No success story yet-- I just found this thread by a search as I am still researching. Maybe I'll be back.

ETA: I first heard about this in the book "The Mood Cure".

Hi, I just ran into this thread doing a search. I realize that it's old, but I thought I'd add some info in the event that it's helpful and somebody else digs it up later while looking into pyroluria.

Ok, first, I'll say that we've been working with the Pfeiffer Treatment Center (the place referenced int he link above) for 2+ years for our oldest daughter. She has been diagnosed as borderline for pyroluria and they help us manage her nutrient needs. We have found our work with them to be very helpful in dealing with bowel and behavior issues that were not being impacted through other means that we had tried (beh. mod. programs, psych/social work, GI docs, diet, NAET treatment, dietary changes, etc.)

That said, if you are strictly looking to discover if you have pyroluria, you do not need to work with a physician, you can just order a test to do at home (urine sample) and mail it in for results. Of course depending on the results you will want to seek out medical guidance, but it's useful as a screening tool. After DD was diagnosed, DH and I both ordered tests for ourselves to do at home to help us decide if we should be seeking supplementation guidance for ourselves. You can order a pyrrole test here or here (both well-regarded labs). Because the krypropyrroles are light-sensitive, you want to do the test and then freeze quickly, with minimal light exposure. As a general rule, a result below 10 is normal, 10-20 is "borderline" but generally treated if coupled with other clinical symptoms, and 20+ is considered clinically significant.

Hope that's helpful, and good luck.

I know this is a really old thread but I ran across it looking of info on Pyroluria. I have been to hell and back with my 10 yr old dd who was dx'd with ADHD/ODD at only 6-7 yrs old and at 8 we got a shocking Dx of Bipolar 1 with a wee bit of psychosis. Meds helped subdue her but life was still hell. After 2 years I opted to quit meds and try another direction and we went with Empower+ from TrueHope and that was the 1st time we saw improvement. 9 months later I learned about Pyroluria online and it was an "ah ha!" moment. I got the pedi to order the test so I could send it though Quest labs (which meant my insurance co would pay for the test) who in turn sent it to Biocenter which is one of the few labs who correctly perform the test. Her level was 90! Severe pyroluria! We got her on the right treatment which is HUGE doses of Zinc (100mg/day for the 1st month to bring down the pyrolle level) and B6/P5P (1000mg/day total for now) with several others. She is a very different child now after only a month on treatment! Were running tests next week to check for problems with histamine, homocyctine and copper (high copper is a problem with pyroluria)/heavy metals.

So I urge you, if you think its a problem, GET TESTED! Its $80 though Biocenter.  If you or a your child have problems with anxiety/depression/bipolar/adhd/schizophrenia , get tested! DRUGS WILL NOT FIX IT, how ever, $30 mo on the right vitamins will return life to normal. Its exciting to think that in a year all this will be a memory instead of daily reality. Treatment is for life but thats better then a lifetime on drugs that don't work and have horrible side effects.
