Jury summons

Ugh. A few I got a summons for jury duty for March 3rd. If the baby hasn't arrived by then I will be over 38 weeks pregnant. It would be absolutely MISERABLE to have to sit all day without my feet up, etc. Obviously if she has made her appearance I'll be able to get out of it.

Normally I wouldn't mind a jury summons. But why NOW?

I don't have a doctor. I'm having a UP. And my PCP won't see me AT ALL during pregnancy, for anything.

My DH got a jury duty summons recently and it said he could request another date within the next 10 months. Was that given as an option on your summons?

It allows you to request one postponement. But doesn't say how long you can postpone for. I think I'm going to request to postpone until at least September. DD3 will be around 6 months of so then. I could reasonably leave her with IL's for a day, or DH if he could get a day off. It wouldn't be ideal, but it could be doable. That's IF they'll let me.

Also do a search on MDC, there have been quite a few threads about pregnant/breastfeeding moms getting summoned. Might find something helpful there.

I was summons for duty in Jan and I just told them that I would be 8 mths pregnant and I had two kids at home with no child care and that was enough to get out of it. I was also summons when I was pregnant with my dd for the same time and I told them the same thing and it worked.
I hope you don't have to go. I think it would be a lot of extra stress.

I did the same this pregnancy as well (got out of jury duty). It depends on the laws in your state so check that out.

Here in Colorado it says:

Sole responsibility for the daily care of a permanently disabled person living in the same household to the extent that the performance of juror service would cause a substantial risk of injury to the health of the disabled person…

And requires a doctor's certificate stating that that person is disabled. Or you have to be physically or mentally so ill you can't serve. And again, doctor's notice required.

There are no provisions for SAHP, newborns, etc.

I would call them and ask for a deferrment. Or, you can go if you haven't had the baby and possibly get excused and not have to worry about getting called back with a new baby.

If you are responsible for the care of minors, unable to leave them in other hands, then you are exempt from jury duty (at least here in Texas, I would expect most states are the same). You need to look into this further, you may be exempt.

You are unlikely to get picked even if you have to go which could work out better because you will have served your duty by showing up. I can't imagine anyone wanting a woman on a panel who could go at any time.

If you can't get out of it, show off your belly and look very uncomfortable.

yes, but it can't hurt to write down your reasoning and see what they say. I just did it. I wrote that I am a stay at home mom with no one to watch my child and I got a letter back saying i was excused. But even if they don't take your excuse...just go and I BET you won't be chosen just based on the fact that you look like your going to pop at any moment...no lawyers want to have to re pick a jury just because they picked an almost due prg woman. trust me.

Well I requested the postponement. Colorado has an option to request it online. So, here's hoping. I really don't mind serving in the future. I've never done it before. I requested to postpone until September.

If I have to go in, well, I'll have to go in. Sadly I don't look pregnant. I am a big big girl, and even DH's family admits I still don't look pregnant. Just fatter. But, I'm sure I could get the point across.
