I am the odd one. I read every e-mail, every web site, and everything they do on the computer. It is part of the privilage to use the computer. If they do not like it, they are welcome to not use it. If they do not want me to see, they are doing some wrong.
At ten, they are too young to have free run of the computer. Too many preditors out there. Too much that they are not mature enough to handle.
At fourteen, they get a bit more freedom, however, there is always the stipulation that I CAN and likely will read everything, up till the age of 18. Once they are an adult, they are entitled to computer privacy and freedom. Until that time, the computer is mine, the internet service is mine, the office is mine, the house is mine, the electricity is mine. I will protect my children from themselves if I have to.
I do not equate "personal privacy" with privacy to do anything and in everything.
It is totally in line with GD to give consequences to actions. That is part of learning to live in with world. Just to LIVE you have to understand actions and consequences. It is part of life. Children who learn that early end up ahead of the game, IMHO.
