Coraline

Has anyone seen Coraline yet?

I will be taking my 8y/o (almost 9) dd to see it tonight. It seems a little scary, I know she will love it though. She seems to like dark things.

However, I wonder if it would be too much for my 7y/o dd to see it. She seems to really hang on to scarier images and sometimes has nightmares afterwards. She says she wants to see Coraline too but I am not sure. We will have to travel out of town to see it as it is not playing in our local theatre so that means that either my dh or myself will have to occupy my younger dd for a couple of hours while the other pair sees the movie. This is workable but if it isn't too scary a movie I think I would bring the younger dd too.

Thanks in advance!

ETA: Marley and Me is also playing at the theater but dh thinks it would be too sad for the 7y/o. Opinions?

Have you shown her the trailer and all the stuff about the movie on YouTube (or some similar site)? That might help gauge her reaction to the images and music and overall cinematography.

Yes, she has seen the trailer. She has seen it on the big screen as well, which can be a lot different from a smaller screen. Checking for more on youtube may be a good idea, thanks.

I thought parts of it were really creepy and I'm 34, lol. There's a part where the Other Mother gives Coraline a "present", which is a box with 2 buttons, a needle, and a spool of thread placed in the form a face, and tells Coraline that if she wants to stay there with her, she has to let her sew the buttons into her (Coraline's) eyes. I know that that would be way too intense for my nearly-7 year old.

OK, judging by the comments on YouTube this movie may be a bit too much for my 7 y/o dd. Still think that my 8 y/o will love it though.
