I just started Cloth Diapering Today!

: I'm probably too excited about it. I wish I would have started many children ago, but at least I'm starting now. I jumped in and made them myself and finally have enough finished to get started. My friend and I are making pocket diapers together. I will have 30 one size pocket diapers when I am finished. I think that should be adequate for my busy life and two in diapers. We found some great deals and ended up only spending $2.74 per diaper. And that was with a few mistakes that cost unnecessary extra.

I'm still trying to figure out the best thing to get for soakers. I just cut up a bunch of old t shirts to start with, but would love to hear what you think, because I definitely need to buy a bunch???

Yay! I love to hear about others jumping on the cloth diapering band wagon!

Believe it or not, the cheapest and best source for soaker materials is in the car section at wal-mart or target. They are microfiber terry cloth towels, and are the same fabric used by major cloth diapering companies. You can get a bag of them for around $5 I believe. 2 or 3 layers are sufficient for good absorbency, just make sure that they're hidden between the diaper layers or covered in another fabric and facing away from baby skin as it can be really irritating if placed directly against the skin. Tri-folding them is usually the easiest way to use them, just fold them in thirds and stuff them in your pocket dipes. If you're looking for fabrics online, birdseye is another cheap and good soaker material, I recommend using 6-8 layers of this. Any of the organics are good, like hemp terry or fleece. I use hemp french terry when making my own diapers. Flannel can also be used, I recommend 6-8 layers for good absorbency.

Don't forget to post pictures of your stash on the cloth diapering thread when you're done!

microfiber is great you can also buy it by the yard from coops.

congrats and welcome aboard. it's amazing how freeing it feels to be less dependant on disposable diapers , walking right past that isle at the store with a big grin on your face.
be careful though it is addictive ...lol

Congrats and welcome to the world of cloth diapering.

I second the warning. It is addicting.

I am on the flip side in re: soaker materials. I always bump for natural fibers in a diaper. You can also get hemp/cotton in coops. A little more pricey than the micro fiber but it is a good, natural, performance choice next to baby, without the synthetics.

Cloth diapering is fun. Becareful with some fabrics that absorb, you don't want it right next to your babies skin. It will suck moisture out that they need. Thirsties has a nice soaker you can lay in the diaper. Kissaluvs also has one.

Wohoo! I agree that there are all sorts of things you can use. Like pp said. Just watch which ones are against baby's skin.

If you want to go with traditional materials...here is a great mom to buy from:
