Give me your list of most influential scientific papers

I am trying to get to the core of what is known out there about vaccinations.
So that means I am trying to look at the scientific research as much as possible, as hard to read as they sometimes are.

Although I try to trust my intuition as best I can, I want to rely on professionals who have done their job by gathering research based on actual events and tests.

There are A LOT of papers out there.

For those of you who have decided: To Vax or Not to Vax, or to Selectively Vax/Delay the Vax:

Which scientific papers were most influential to you to finally help you make your decisions?

Give me at least your top 5

I don't really have a top five because so much is needed to be looked at...but I can think of a few that have stuck in my head for one reason or another.

on measles/mmr/autism:

I would say there were so many here but I guess this one sticks out:
http://www.plosone.org/article/info%...l.pone.0003140

but also the other one that I cant seem to find the link to now that looked at many more children and examined blood samples for measles evidence.

a couple like this are in my pertussis section:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9...?dopt=Abstract

this one struck me on serotype replacement:http://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retri...40673603137725
but i have like 10 others too but that one stuck in my head for stark wording

more later, babe crying

Thanks

And please include your decision about vaxing

we selectively vaccinate (DTaP, HIb, MMR, IPV)

I have this post marked:

http://www.mothering.com/discussions...65&postcount=8

for a few studies it has in it, esp at the end on flu vaccine and pregnancy

one that helped my hep a decision:

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/544890

http://pediatrics.aappublications.or...full/119/1/e12

(both are supposedly positive studies for Hep A but I actually saw many reasons in them NOT to do it, which was where we were headed)

Really, there are too many to make it into a top 5 list, because I evaluated them all disease by disease, and vaccine by vaccine.

I recommend reading about each of the diseases, and the rationale FOR vaccination against each of them, here:
http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pin...k-chapters.htm
(start with chapter 5, diphtheria)

And to hear the argument against those vaccines, disease by disease, this is a good place to start (they reference with a link to the original research all of the arguments)

http://insidevaccines.com/wordpress/
(looking through the "quick picks" on the right is a good place to start with that site)

Now, to get a really balanced perspective, you'll have to find out if there are compelling counter arguments to those counter arguments, etc.
(hope I'm not frightening you...lol )

I wish there was a quicker way to direct people towards "a comprehensive understanding of the vaccination debate", but there's not. But, wanting to see original scientific research is a great start! In my experience, when you're first looking into the issue, it's really confusing and overwhelming, but over time gets a lot easier as you become familiar with the concepts and scientific jargon. I think most of the "sciency people" here would agree.

Good luck! And welcome to the forum!

I know there have been some good ones on IPV v OPV posted here as well as examinations of polio itself...if anyone has those, I think they would be a good addition.

One thing that I found helpful was looking at the diseases that the vaccines were for, and not just the vaccines themselves. I found that most studies that were about vaccines were funded by the vaccine manufacturers (in some form or another), so they weren't very reliable to me. Rather, I looked at what each disease would be like if dd caught it. I looked into the percentages of severe cases, what years those were from, and other factors that might play into the side effects. I actually didn't find most of the VAD to be that frightening, once I looked into them. I found it especially compelling that breastfeeding babies helped to minimize effects of diseases, as it gives babies a wonderfully strong immune system.
