Could someone provide some links for me so that I can read up on what to expect when my son's penis starts to retract? He's just 17 months and my first experience with an intact penis and I just need to start educating myself on what to look for (I realize it will probably be years away yet--but you never know and I want to be prepared). I also still get confused by some of the terms that are used and want to be informed. I don't want to start to see changes and think there's something wrong when it's something as simple as he's just starting to retract. Although I have a very foreskin friendly Ped., I still would rather try to diagnose at home instead of taking him there.

Also, if there were to be problems when he starts to retract, what would that look like?

Thanks for your help! We're having another boy this time around (due in 3 weeks) and I'm not so paranoid this time about how to care for an intact penis! It's been sooooo easy. I don't know what in the world I was so worried about!

You'd probably want to read the 'foreskin issue' and 'foreskin retraction' stickies. I'm not much help as my DS is 18 months and non retractable. From what I can remember reading from other posts, sometimes it can look red, or if your DS has retracted or pulled on it. Also you can see smegma sometimes, it looks like white pearls, I've been told. I'm sure others will also give you info about their sons when they have retracted. Sometimes boys don't retract till puberty!

Though reading those threads is a good idea, most likely nothingwill happen. It won't be a huge sudden change, like whe a girl gets her first period. Deppending on how old your DS's are, they may not choose to share the moment with you.

It will happen at some point, probably gradually. There may be occasional irratation along the way, that they may share with you or they might not mention.

Both of my sons are intact. There was nothing we needed to do and nothing obvious happened. Just not an issue, except for doctors throwing fear into parent's minds.

Most likely they will even learn to retract and rinse in the shower when they are older, but you might want to mention it to them around puberty.

Regards
