Traveling abroad and cloth..flats?

After this baby comes we're going to be traveling for a few months and I may not always have access to a washer and dryer so I thought that it would be best to go with flats. I'm actually really nervous about using them but I figure I've got some time to work on folds and get used to them What are your favorite materials for flats? I know there's birdseye, muslin, flannel... I'm all about texture not so much absorbency. I like them to be fluffy soft! What are your experiences with flats? Do they hold in mess as well as say a prefold? Is it doable full time?

We use them for stuffing pockets. I like that they dry superfast. They dry overnight even if it is pretty humid.

Mine are the basic birdseye from Gerber. I think they are pretty soft, but I am not a softness snob

If you like pockets, that would actually work well, because the shell part of the diaper washes/dries fairly easily and you could stuff with flats like the PP suggested.

On the other side, I'd probably be more of a flannel girl, but you can't snappi that. If you like to snappi, birdseye would be better... Bamboo velour would be tempting because it's super soft at first, but my experience is it gets less soft with use, so I wouldn't.

I prefer pins so that shouldn't be a problem I worry about getting pockets clean... plus my dh hates synthetics on little ones... he'd definitely have something to say about it!

My birdseye flats are not fluffy soft - except the OLD ones....I've heard gauze of softer.....but IMO they are soft enough - just wash and dry them a few times first. The ones from Nicky's Diapers are actually square! They come from All Together Diaper Co......

Greenmountaindiapers.com has unbleached ones.....

GMD just came out with unbleached birdseye flats, and they are awesome. Very soft, easy to pin or snappi (my GMD bleached ones have such a tight weave that I can barely get a pin through all the layers when I fold it). I go back and forth between using them full time and using prefolds. They're about the same in terms of holding in the mess. It's really all in how you fold it and how you fasten it. I personally like to do the origami fold and kind of roll/fold in the side wings as I'm putting it on and get it nice and snug around the legs. As with anything that has a little bit of a learning curve, be prepared to have a few frustrating diaper changes, then it'll all fall into place and you'll be a pro.

I would use the gerber flats and pins. They are pretty inexpensive and when traveling there is always a chance of luggage being lost, misplaced. So if something like that were to happen and they were lost, you would not be out of a lot of money. I always found they were easy to wash and hang dry in hotel rooms, etc.
