Help, please. First dentist visit went horrible

DS is 19.5 months. We just went into his first dental appointment. Besides not really liking the dentist one bit, it just didn't go well. DS has decay on top teeth and perhaps a back molar(he is only missing his 2 yo mlars at this point). He suggested putting him under and hospital to fix it(is this right? Its what my ped said as well) but we can start with a "pre-med" to shave down the sides of the teeth to see what the deal is and they might not be deep and can be stopped by shaving down.

I don't know what to do...I know I need to find a new dentist because this one was just horrible in his demeanor, but I want to go into a new one with better ammo. DS will not drink milk or the things needed to heal cavities. He is tough to get his teeth brushed and does a minimal job himself. He sometimes will only eat fruit...

I'm so sad right now...I feel like a horrible mom.

I would go to the tribe area on here for your area and ask for a ped dentist recommendation for a second opinion. It sounds like they do not even know how bad the decay is and they want to put him under?

Hopefully someone else will be able to give you some advice here as well.
Hugs I know this is really hard.

hugs to you ! I second the pp's idea of posting to your tribal area, this worked for me, although we are still sortof beginning again with a new dentist, it defintely helped me get on the right trail of referral info!
It's a shock to hear this kind of news in that all at once way. I am just calming down a little from news too and realizing that there are still lots of questions to ask, like the xray issue. If they don't know how bad it is (ie into the dentine or not) how can they make such a blanket recommendation.....

you are doing a wonderful Mama thing, you're on track, asking questions, protecting your babe.......hugs and best of luck!

Don't let anyone, especially yourself, make you feel like a horrible mom. I agree with the other 2 responses 100%, but something you can do on your own if you have a health food store anywhere around, get some Xylitol crystals. I'd suggest Spiffies but a lot of Health food stores have never heard about them, the following is a link to their website www.spiffies.com.

Make a syrup of 1 tsp Xylitol + 1 tsp water and wipe this on your little ones teeth [DO NOT RINSE IT OFF], this will halt any acids that are rotting his teeth. Xylitol is sweet so he probably won't object too badly about it. You can also add the Xylitol to his toothpaste but check first to make sure there isn't a POISON WARNING LABEL on his toothpaste tube.

If his toothpaste is minty flavored, he probably doesn't really like it, my son - now almost 4 - says its hot in his mouth. We use Tom's of Maine Silly Strawberry No-Fluoride and I add 2 grams of Xylitol crystals to it each time my son brushes and then spread the Xylitol syrup on his teeth so they're well protected.

Check out www.zellies.com, www.epicdental.com, www.xlear.com for more information about Xylitol.

Actually my mom discovered that as important as calcium is to teeth it isn't as important as silica. Without the silica the calcium doesn't absorb well. We use homeopathic cell salts for my son. Every day he gets 2 each of:

Calcerea phos 6X [Calcium Phosphate]
Calcerea fluor 6X [Calcium Fluoride]
Calcarea carbonica 6X [calcium carbonate]
Mag phos 6X [Magnesia Phosphate]
Natrum phos 6X [Natrum phosphate]
Silica 6X [Silicea]

I haven't a clue of how they work, but my son's dentist remarks every time he sees him how strong my son's teeth are, and this is for a little boy who was supposed to have major surgery for dental decay to the tune of $3400 when he was 18 mo old.

He still has all of his baby teeth, the little cavities have all remineralized, the one big one has been halted, etc.. And you can do it too! Just don't expect it to be instantaneous! It took 6 months for my mom and me to begin to to get his mouth clean of the acids rotting his teeth and reverse his cavities.

Now we have a great dentist who is encouraging our efforts.

I think you need to find your "tribe" I'm sure you'll find a good dentist referral there.

Hope it all works out.

Hello, i am a dental hygienist. If baby is not bothered by his cavities, please don't give him anything prior to dental visit. It can wait. Number one he might come around and let some dentist fix it later, two it is not a big deal, probably best treatment is to have a hygienist or a dentist to give him a few treatments of topical fruoride, it is very strong and helpfull, will slow the process and then with time i am sure he will let you fix it. My 14 month wouldn't let us brush his teeth we got him electrical tooth brush, and no toohtpaste, he seem to like it, (sometimes) as long as you can remove plaque it is fine. Let him do it with electrical tooth brush by himself he might come around. If not they will fall out, that's why we have baby teeth so we can practice before adult ones come in, also make sure you have fluoride in the water, if not you need to give him some fluoride supplements........Good luck!

a few other things to think about...
if or when you have time...lol...read the 'curing cavities with nutrition' sticky(this has tons of ideas on things to help) on the dental forum, and read at 'safbaby.com' and 'fluoridealert.org'.
