DH was laid off today....we're in need of budget (and career seeking) help

DH and several other employees from his job were laid off today with no notice. He worked for a company that gave financial, tax and other advice to business owners. Two months ago, their sales were down only 1%. This month is their worst on record in their 40 year history with a drop of 33% of sales.
I am a SAHM/trying to WAH.

Due to the circumstances, DH is eligible for priority rehire and UI.

UI will be $286 a week. He also received one week's pay in lieu of notice which was $420
We are waiting for our $1980 in Tax Refund.

Here are our current expenses:

Rent: 550
Gas: 45 in winter, 16 in summer.
Electric: 55 in winter, 65 in summer
Landline/Internet: 40
Credit Cards: $60 for three cards. (we are paying them off.)
Cell-Phone: $45
Food: $250 for three of us.
Laundry (Coin-op): (We do two loads a week and a load of diapers @ $2.25 a load to wash and dry in our apartment's laundry room.,....that's the cheapest we know of .)
Bus Passes for us both: $30

We called the medical creditors that we have and asked for "holds" until we can find jobs, which they allowed us to do.

We just signed a new contract with the cell-phone company, so we'd have to pay $275 to get out of it.

I recently went on a pattern and fabric and notions buying frenzy with some money from DH's small bonus last month to make shirts for DH and basic clothes for DD and I....so we'll be okay on clothes through the fall.

What else can we do in the meantime to tighten up?

I've started selling some of our items on eBay/Craigslist/other places to help raise more funds so we can try to keep our head above water for a few months, hopefully less if/when DH and I can find WOH jobs.

DH and I are looking for jobs in working opposite shifts. I'd need to rent a pump so I can WOH as DD is still nursing about every four hours around the clock and otherwise on demand. My job history is extremely sketchy as I've never held a job for longer than eight months and have had issues with quitting willy nilly.....also, I don't really have a marketable skill.....

I type accurately, although not very fast (20wpm) and have some filing and customer service skills.

I've worked as a telemarketer, for the California Conservation Corps as a cook, as a cashier at Target, Sears, as a PBX Operator for a known Casino Chain, as a legal receptionist, as a CSR at a Video Store, as a Retail Merchandiser for Hallmark as well as running my custom Judaica business that's on its last legs while SAH with DD.

I've done a whole heck of a lot of volunteer work before and since DD was born in the interest of keeping my resume at least somewhat updated.

I've only finished one year of college.

I'm looking for job advice......my goal is to go back to school in the fall and finish my AA.....in my state, one can Substitute Teach with an AA/AS + 6 credits in Education. I plan to do that until I can save to go on to a University, then earn my teaching credential.....my specific interests are in Montessori Pedagogy and Fiber Arts.

Can anyone offer any advice on the job search as well as budget advice?
I apologize in advance for the rambling post.

Thanks

I don't have any specific advice as I'm not seeing areas to cut. But I just wanted to send hugs and positive energy that you'll find jobs soon.

YOu might be able to skip drying your clothes in the coin dryer and instead use hangers or a line, but this will only save you a tiny amount.

As far as career advice, have you looked into school financial aid? How much could you get? It might be enough to go ahead and start sooner rather than later.

Could you do alterations? Teach people to sew/knit/craft? Take in another child to babysit?

My info is breastfeeding related. When both my children were 18 months old I WOH part-time (3 8 hours days per week gone about 30 hours per week total when adding in travel time).

Neither one of them would go more than 2 or 3 hours without nursing on days I was home with them, but did just fine for 9-10 hours if at daycare or home with DH. Neither would have accepted pumped milk in a sippy cup either. I physically was comfortable not pumping too (not engorged). You may need to pump for your comfort, but I'm not sure I be to concerned about pumping vast amount of milk (i.e renting an expensive pump). Both eventually had a fairly CLW (one at 33 months and the other at 42 months).

Do you have any savings? Can you wash your clothes in the bath tub ( I know not fun) and only take the cloth diapers to the laundry mat. and line dry? I set up a dog line for a quick one from one end of a room to the other.

Id go to a food pantry (not food stamps) if you can . Getting help with food would be a great help for your budget at this point.

My info is BFing-related too: do NOT rent (or buy) a pump! I WOH 8+commute hours a day, and pumped 4x/day. I was GIVEN a double-electric pump through Medicaid (which you would be eligible for too, sounds like).

I will try and think of something inspirational and creative, but until then I wanted to send you a and tell you I'm sorry. This is such a rough time to be dealing with this, please remember to take care of yourselves during the stress so it doesn't eat at your relationship w/each other.

Good luck mama, you will get so much good advice here!

Is $286 before or after taxes? It's enough to cover your budget by my calculations (1200ish a month), and even taking out fed taxes (OUr UI is taxed at 10% for feds and 6ish% for the state we receive it from) wouldn't drop it below your budget, though having taxes taken out it entirely optional. You can qualify for up to 3 tiers of UI benefits currently. Each has less time. Our second tier benefits are for 75% of the # of weeks of first tier, and 3rd tier will be 50% so for us, we received 12 weeks initially, 9 weeks secondary and 6 weeks with 3rd tier.

We're choosing not to have taxes taken out of UI. I think that our state is one of those with an extension of UI benefits because of the unemployment rate here, but I'm not sure of that. If there is no authorized extension, then we need to find a job here in 13 weeks which is the max for UI in our state.

Once DH is able to find a job that pays close to what he was making before (He was making $12 an hour and we lived fine on that, we lived frugally when he was earning $9 an hour.) I'll go back to SAHM and begin attending college again this summer no matter what.

I think that we can tub wash clothes....I remember writing down the info on how to do it. Also, we can go back to selecting two or three outfits for the week and alternating wearing them to cut down on laundry needing to be washed.

Also, I have stamps galore....don't remember how I got so many. There are always swaps to get some things that we can use/need and can trade for stuff we have and no longer need or I can make stuff to reverse swap with all of the craft stuff I have.....and it would only cost some stamps to send them.

The local food pantries are on our list. Luckily, we'd restocked our pantry at the beginning of the month so we'll be okay on food for a while.

DH recieved his final check today.....it was just over $1500. He wants to pay March and April rent in advance. That way we can focus on other monthly bills with the UI. When our tax refund shows up, we can use that to pay three months of rent in advance. Is that a good idea?

It's not really a bad idea. I would be more tempted to put that money in savings to make sure you have funds for an emergency.

You know you best. Would you spend it if you didn't pre-pay your rent? If not, I would put it in savings and earmark it for rent. You could need to move for work, have unexpected bills, etc.

All states got a possible 7 week extension, but some also got an additional 13 week extension. If the UE rate is 6% or greater, then there are 2 extensions.

MY only tip is to not delay getting help. Go to food pantries now, before you need them to help give you a cushion in your budget. They don't always have food, so you need to learn the ins and outs before things are dire.

Rather than thinking of ways to save more, I would immediately begin thinking of ways to earn more. Update both or your resumes and post them here for feedback (or in the Working Parent Forum.) Each of you set aside a few hours during the day to work on the job hunt - posting resumes, responding to job postings, reaching out to your networks regarding work, pounding the pavement applying for jobs.

Do not start washing your clothes in the bathtub when that time could be spent looking for ways to generate income.

While looking for new work.. you will probably qualify for WIC, medicaid, and at least a little bit of food stamps. Use everything you can from govt benefits while you can, they are there for a reason and will at least make sure your family has health care and food on the table. Maybe you can get a pump from WIC as well.?

Your budget doesn't look that bad, and $12 an hour seams like a reasonable wage to be able to find new employment.
