Tell me about your experience with wool

I'm fairly new to CD and have been using BGs since they are so easy but am feeling ready to branch out further into the world of cloth diapering

I just ordered some prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers and some Dappi nylon covers, but I am really intriged by wool. The covers are so cute and I love the thought of the breathability and the naturalness. I have to wonder though, does it really work? Has anyone made their own longies/covers from sweaters with good results? I would love to make some covers since wool is pretty expensive to buy. Also has anyone tried hand knitted longies? I have a friend that would make me some I think....

Anyway, tell me your experiences and what you like/dislike about wool!

Wool has never leaked on me, I just air dry when damp and put on another one.....pin the prefolds - poop has to be washed out......bombproof at night, longies are the best for night - no pj bottoms! Don't have any homemade ones though.......very cute though

I love my two Kiwi Pie wool covers for day and my Little Beetle wool cover for overnight. My experience is that a fitted diaper works better underneath them than a prefold -- I would have needed to size up on my covers or REALLY work to get a nice trim fold/Snappi job on a prefold to have them completely cover a prefold.

With a trim fitted & wool cover, the CD butt is only slightly bigger than with a pocket like BG 3.0...

Wool really does work, and the lanolization/maintenance is not as hard as it may seem. I have only Disana pull on covers, but love them. They really are bulletproof, but I use them only at night.

I've never purchased wool covers, but I love my recycled sweater covers and my knitted soakers, longies and nothing is cuter then skirties.

What are skirties? They even sound cute!

I have been in love with my Aristocrat soakers and longie since I've been using them (about 2 months), but I did just post with a question about an issue I'm having with them not being as water resistant as they used to be.

However, I'm certain I am doing something wrong because every CDing mom I know swears by the wool covers as leakproof. and I will say that nothing has ever leaked out of the wool down the legs or through the top - the problem I am having is dampness getting into LO's clothes and sleeping area.

I'm sure I will get some good advice on how to address this, and even with this minor issue to be figured out, overall I LOVE the wool.

We're having a small rash issue (going away, finally! made my own triple paste and it seems to be working! )and the wool has been the only thing I want to put on her because it breathes so much more than the other PUL covers I have. She's been either airing out or wearing wool only since she's had the rash, and I think it's been a big help in that sense.

I'd go for it! I don't know about any other brands, and Aristocrat is sooooo expensive (thanks generous baby shower gifters!) and I've heard great things about Disana and also some homemade ones, though I've been told to be careful about making covers from recycled sweaters because you can have stink issues if it's not totally 100% wool with it's anti-odor properties.

I forgot to mention that I sized up on all my wool soakers/longies (not wraps) and found that I could get away with machine washing them - they shrank a bit on warm.......
Babyology - don't last as long as Aristocrats - mine are fraying already (1 kid)
Aristocrats - rock but are pricey
Disana - rock and are reasonably priced
Imse Vimse Wool Bumpy - rock - easiest to care for and clean, under $30
Blue Cloud (etsy) rock with awesome gussets
Stacinator Wool - no gussets but did nice and trim!

my fave is the LANA -- pricey (even more so now!) but amazingly soft and long-lasting, great for overnight. esp if you or LO has sensitive skin, worth it. i find aristocrats nice but itchy. buy one in each size.

i also have some snap wool covers i like -- rainbow serging around the edge, don't remember the name.

the commercial stuff is more waterproof than my homemade stuff, which will allow some dampness through with a heavy wet, but i just use homemade for daytime anyway.

i really like wool in general because it doesn't give the skin that wet feeling of a waterproof cover. so breathable, esp in the summer!

I'm in love with LoveyBums! i wish I had nothing else in the way of covers.

I liked doing wool for the most part. I did find that poo stained it and was impossible to get out. I borrowed an aristocrat, and loved it, but was always worried about stains.

I haven't tried any commercially available wool covers, just hand-knitted longies that I made myself. They work really well. I put bamboo fitted's underneath and have never had leak issues. I do lanolise fairly regularly - probably weekly - and I always handwash them so they don't shrink.

I'm knitting more longies for my newborn on the way - he/she will be a Winter baby, so longies will be perfect teamed with infant prefolds.
