I need some inspiration - summer group unit study

Our hs group meets sporadically in the winter, but come May we kick into high gear. We run group days where everyone contributes something. Last year we did a summer long science day. Each of us would take turns teaching/running the activity for that week - covering a topic on biology. So we are planning on doing something similar this summer.

I'm interested in doing something more activity/craft based and less academic. But I've got February Brain Atrophy and no inspiration.

So what would you do? 6-10 kids, age range 5-13 (The little ones tend to participate in their own way or go play), 4 to 8 "classes" worth. Outdoor stuff is great, crafts, activities. It just needs to be linked together with some kind of "theme". And the "theme" can be unique to me, it's not something that has to tie in to what other people in the group are contributing. That's what we did last summer but we are all open to doing it another way.

Our planning meeting is next month and I'd like to have a rough idea of what I'd like to contribute over the summer. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

not sure if this is what you're looking for....but, i would do a lapbook. you can simplify it for the little ones & make it more in depth for older kids. they have a lot of great free ones here:

you can do a "theme", or we personally enjoyed the butterflies lapbook & honey bees lapbook - they were excellent! here are those links:

butterflies: http://www.homeschoolshare.com/butterfly_lapbook.php

honey bees: http://www.homeschoolshare.com/honey_bee_lapbook.php

we did lots of hands-on activities, crafts, nature walks, etc. with both. you could bring a laptop computer and even show some youtube videos you pick out beforehand - there are some short excellent ones!!! here's pix of our butterflies lapbook. we did it when my dd was in grade k: http://www.freewebs.com/mytwomonkeys...lbumID=2197184

hope this helps.

Some general theme ideas:

water
bugs
wildlife watch
birds
dirt
how things grow
movement (how the body works, exercise, hydration, etc.)
circus day (juggling, poi, stilts -- all fairly easy to make and use)

How about an "Around the World with Food" theme. Each week a different family could provide a sampling of food from a different country or region, as well as a small craft project that the children could do.
