Cant find a local group. :(

Thread Starter
My dude 6 yr old is lonley and I cant find a local homeschooling group that isnt fundamentalist literalist Christian.

I tried starting an unschooling/ecclectic group a while ago but I dont have many members.

I have looked up to 30 miles away and nothing.

Can you share your links to find a local group? Maybe there is something I am missing. (I hope!)

Have you searched in Yahoo Groups?

Have you contacted your state's inclusive homeschooling group?

Alternatively, you could just sign up for homeschooling activities (at the Y or the local community center or wherever) and hope to meet some homeschoolers who may have joined the fundamentalist group because it's all they could find, but are not all that fundamentalist themselves.

You wouldn't happen to be in NC would you? LOL! I have the smae problem here. I broke down and started having park days with some homeschoolers from our cub scouts, but it's not what I was looking for, but my kids are still having fun and I suppose that is what's important.

I am!

Although I am a Christian, I'm not interested in an exclusionary HS group.

And I'm having a hard time integrating into existing groups. They aren't terribly welcoming.

We don't have a local group here (we might, but not that I've found except one that we really didn't mesh with). I do have a couple friends who homeschool, so we just do our best to get together at the park once a week. There are times I wish we had a bigger group to involve ourselves with when we wanted. I also suggest trying your state-wide homeschooling group. I might email ours when/if I'm ready for a bigger group.

Where are you located?

Have you tried posting here on MDC in the Find your Tribe forum?

We just found a group last week by posting on a secular homeschooling umbrella's yahoo group and then I was recommended to a co-op that some of them belong to which is also secular.

Good Luck!

Here are links to lists. The HEM one doesn't include groups that require a statement of faith - support groups. The NHEN site is temporarily down due to technical problems, but I'd bookmark it and check back. I don't know what state you're in, or I'd link you to a page in the A-Z HomesCool site where there would be a whole page of links to groups and things in your state - but look here: Regional Information. And while you're at it, submit information about the little group you started to these lists! There may very well be others looking for you. Lillian

We're in the same boat, but I know for sure that there isn't any groups that I'm missing here. The only groups that are organized and actually get together are the religious ones. Sigh.
