Help figure out what i Need- Green mountain

DH and i are seriously considering using cloth dipes with our new little one this fall. I have been doing alot of research and have come up with using Prefolds and covers are the best/cheapest bet. So now I need some help.
I noticed on green mountain it has newborn size which fits 5-10 pounds, periwinkle doesnt say how many pounds , yellow which fits 10-15 pounds. Is it cost effective to buy the newborn ones for just a few weeks or should i get the periwinkle ones right from the start? Are they too large on a newborn?
I am planning to use the thirsties covers also. How many of those do you suggest for a newborn?
And one last thing- do i need doublers with prefolds? I assume they are needed mostly with AIO's but wasnt positive if I would need them on prefolds. Thanks!

I bought the periwinkle for DD since DS weighed 10 lbs by 2 weeks of age, and it was accurately estimated that DD would be over 9 lbs (she was 9.5). I had to fold down the rise by about an inch or so at first but width-wise they were perfect and she had/has a small waist and hips for her size. She is one month now and probably 12 lbs and they fit her perfectly. I would estimate their best usage to be in the 8-13 lb range. I don't need a doubler with these on her. The only time I use a doubler with DS (he wears the toddler size) is for naps or overnight.

It's hard to say what to get since there's no way of knowing how big your baby will be or what the rate of growth might be. I made my decision based off prior experience and was ok with having to fold down the dipe to make it smaller if needed so that I could get more use out of it if the baby ended up being smaller than DS. If you have a 6 or 7 lb baby, the periwinkle will be a bit big at first, but mainly in the length. There's a pic on the GMD site that shows the periwinkle on a 7 lb baby, and it doesn't look that huge, they just have the front folded down a couple inches.

Ok can someone tell me if there is a big difference in the prefolds from GMD and the prefolds from cottonbabies.com? Cottonbabies has chinese and indian both. Whats the difference. GMD are more expensive, are they better?

i can't answer your question about green mountain vs. cotton babies, but i thought i'd give my 2 cents on the newborn vs. periwinkle edge prefolds from green mountain. i got the periwinkle and skipped newborn size because the newborn sizes were out of stock. my baby was 7 pounds when we brought him home, and the prefolds were so big and bulky on him that he cried everytime he had one on. we had to fold the front almost in half, but he has skinny little legs and a low rise, so maybe they'd work better with a differently shaped baby. also, he would only sleep on his side for the first couple of weeks, and i think the extra bulk around the hips was really uncomfortable for him in that position. we've been using some fitted cloth diapers that a friend gave to me for now. he's three weeks old now (not sure of his current weight- maybe about 9 lbs.), and the periwinkle prefolds are still pretty big, but i think he'll be able to wear them soon. i guess its entirely possible we would have had the same problems with smaller prefolds- i think prefolds in general are probably bulkier than most fitted diapers.
btw, i'm new to cloth diapers and being a mom in general, so this is just my opinion based on my very limited experience. hope it helps!

I'm new to cloth diapering, but anticipated that DD would be tiny and she was. About 6-1/2 pounds at birth. I opted to purchase premie sized prefolds from Little Lions because I knew the infant PF from GMD would be huge on her. Now at 2+ weeks, the premies are still a little big and the infants are still huge. I do have to use a doubler but she is a pretty heavy wetter.

It all comes down to the size of the baby.

I bought prefolds from both and am sorry to say I won't be buying from GMD again. I know they tend to get great reviews, but I've seen some wonky stitching, the cloth itself wasn't exactly as soft as what I got from cottonbabies, and the thirds aren't all that precise. One of the 24 I bought also had a weird fold that feels rough to me, but I just ignore it since it was just that one. It still bothers me when I feel it though. Also, I've had the cottonbabies prefolds for twice as long and the stitching is still perfect while some of the GMDs have been losing some of theirs.

I only went with GMD because they had so many more sizing options, but in the end I still had to fold an edge to make it fit right. I now wish I had just gone with cottonbabies again.

I bought the orange (this was before periwinkle was available) ans we only used them for about two weeks. DS was 9 lbs. I sort of regret buying them, but I sold most of them for pretty much what I paid, so all wasn't lost. You can also use them as doublers later on.

And as for doublers, I almost never use them during the day. I guess DS isn't a heavy wetter or something, but I don't have a problem with just a pf. I change him as soon as he pees, so he doesn't get the chance to pee in a wet diaper and leak everywhere.

Thanks mamas. I think from reading all this that I should plan on getting the newborn PFs. DH and i are both small so I dont expect baby to be more than 8# at birth. If even that much.

DS was 8lbs 13oz and he wore the orange edge from GMD for about a month (when I folded them). He could wear them for another month or so trifolded. I've been happy with my GMD. They have been used for a year now and are holding up great. I also have some indians from abby's lane from my twins. They are starting to show some wear now, but they have been in rotation for 4 years so I think that's pretty good
