Other ideas:
-kite flying
-visiting local town festivals & fairs
-visit a farm (or in the late summer, go to 4-H fairs)
-visit parks, gardens, and farms run by universities (these are often free to the public and geared for children/families) (we do this almost weekly around here)
-nature scavenger hunts/hikes (try local, county, or state parks - some are free or have small fees)
we do the kite flying and have fun with that. we do live in a very rural area (did i say very) and there really aren't such things as festivals or fairs unless you are willing to drive 2 hours one way (which for our family with meals and gas is $100 trip, not including entrance fees to anything, so we try and avoid traveling too much). we do go out to the provincial parks around here for camping, hiking and going to the beach (no gardens or farms here - think very very VERY rural )

there are pretty much no organized events for families here so you have to come up with your own ideas.
