Car-Seat Poncho for an Infant Crochet or Knit Pattern?

Google put me all over the place and the only search here brought up- never mind. Anyway, point is, I am looking for a pattern for a crocheted, or knitted if necessary, poncho that I could put over an infant in a car-seat, so basically, a poncho with no or little back, but a nice long front. It's for my mom, as I cannot crochet and have no time to knit. She already has the yarn she wants to use but could be flexible. But she is not so great at improvising or complicated patterns.

Or if you have a really nice poncho pattern that you want to post that's okay too- we will use it if we don't get a car-seat poncho pattern. Cheers!

How about having her knit/crochet a blanket with a long "strip-hole" for the handle of the car seat? Are you talking about a tent to go over a newborn, or something else?

You can knit a poncho by starting with a number of stitches on a set of circular needles. Then, just double the amount of stiches every double row (row: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32). It won't be very long before you have a lot of stitches. It will allow the middle to lay flat like a rug. Then, you can just knit however long you want it to be.

Someone else probably has a better idea.

Darn, I replied and it got erased. First, I wanted to say good luck on your TTC. Also wanted to say that I guess nobody else does have a better idea because nobody else posted! So thanks for your reply.

I think we will just do two triangles, one equilateral and one isoceles with about a 140 degree angle at its top, the longest side of which will match the side of the equilateral triangle, and she can then sew them together from the ends, and leave room in the middle for the head. It will be hard to get the patterns the same if she wants to do stripes because the triangles will be done separately but whatever. She can make the isoceles for the back a plain triangle and do the other big front triangle in a pattern.

Try this. It looks really easy...but I can't knit or crochet for the life of me! There's a video here showing how to assemble it. It's basically just two rectangles. Good luck!!

Thanks for that. I want one specially for a carseat, with a very small back, almost like a huge bib. But that is nice for my toddler...

she can use any 2 piece poncho pattern and just make the back shorter.

For my little ones I knitted a backless sweater with arms. It was a pull over with only about 2 inches knitted below the collar in the back. It worked really well.

Well, so many ponchos are knit in the round or like the pattern Alivia posted that actually it would be really hard to "just" make the back shorter, you know? The backless sweater is a good idea!

I used a top down raglan pattern. after there were two inches knit below the collar I quit knitting in the round, the first row I bound off the 2 middle stitches at the back, then at the begining of each row after that I knit or purled 2 stitches together. It made the opening in the back kind of triangular, but still left plenty of support for the sleeves. If your mom is experienced in knitting in the round she can probably follow these instructions if you print them out with her and give her a top down raglan pattern to go with it.

edited to add: I quit knitting two together about 6 stitches before where an underarm seam would be if there was one.
