Is this right?

I was reading this:

http://www.sciencelab.com/xMSDS-Glut...on_50_-9924161

And the CDC said this:

http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/glutaraldehyde/

But in the CDC's list of vaccine ingredients, glutaraldehyde is listed as a toxin detoxifier?

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pin...nt-table-1.pdf

I'm confused? Please inform me!

I didn't know the answer to your question, so I had a bit of a Google....

The best I've managed to do so far is:

Treatment of the whole-cell bacterial suspensions of Bordetella pertussis with 0.05% glutaraldehyde at room temperature for 10 min kills the bacteria and, except for some histamine sensitising activity, almost detoxifies the pertussis toxin.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2514517

This is rather an old quote, but from what I can see the toxic effects you are referring to are being used to weaken/kill the pertussis bacteria. I would hope that the quantity of glutaraldehyde in the vaccine is well below the levels mentioned in your safety information. I haven't managed to find any figures specific enough to say for sure, however in the first link it seems to be talking about the dangers of a 50% solution and in the pubmed link it is talking about a 0.05% solution.

Presumably it's safer that the vaccine has glutaraldehyde than a big dose of live pertussis bacteria? I hope it is anyway.

Yes, that is much more helpful than the data sheet I found. When I started reading it, I figured something must be off.

Although I have to admit it's still funny to see glutaraldehyde is incompatible with sodium hydroxide...

That's a bit beyond what's left of my GCSE Double Science to answer. I'm glad the link was helpful.
