Hair gel recomendations, please.

My oldest boy has this wild, thick hair that is growing out from a buzz cut. He has cowlicks like crazy, so in the morning his hair is all over the place.

Water is not working so well and he recently decided he wants his hair like daddy's. Well, daddy uses Aussie hair gel that is not the least bit natural and because I am super sensitive to chemicals and strong fragrances the smell of it makes me ill. DH has to do his hair in the car, it bother's me that much.

Anyway, so I'm looking for something I can feel comfortable using on my son, but that will work so he can have a "cool hair do" that lasts more than an hour.

TIA for any suggestions.

Thank you for the suggestions!

I never thought of aloe, I may try that first and see how it tames his wild hair. The Original Sprouts brand looks really good, maybe I can even get DH to switch to that.

Also, thanks for the PioneerThinking website, I'm going to check it out some more in a bit.

I've started making my own with flax seeds from the co-op. 2 Tbsp of seeds in 1 cup of water, boil 5 mins while stirring. Let it cool for 20 or 30 minutes and push through cheesecloth to get the seeds out of the gel. Keeps in the fridge for 2 or 3 weeks. It looks like egg whites, so your son might think it is gross, but it works well. I get my hair a little damp before I put the gel in. I don't think it will work to spike his hair, if that was what he wanted. The gel doesn't start to "hold" until your hair has dried.

We're trying Suncoat's hair gel, so far so good! Nothing creepy in it at all:

Quote:
INGREDIENTS: Aqua (water), natural multi-sugar derived from vegetables, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride (from guar gum), Linum usitatissmum (linseed) seed extract (flax protein), citric acid, tocopherol (vitamin E), Citrus grandis (grapefruit ) seed extract, vegatable glycerin, essential oils.

Thank you for the recipe and Mymble for the link to Suncoat's. That looks great, too. With the shipping from Canada it's a bit more pricey than the Original Sprouts brand, but I'll have to compare both of them and see if i can find some more reviews before ordering.
