I have some stuff I inherited, lots of art, a few pieces by artists of some name, which might be worth a bit. Tons of books, some first editions of Ogden Nash, Rex Stout, other authors from as early as 1940s. I looked at ebay and it looked like there were a lot of misleading claims about some books, and the prices seemed way low by what I saw elsewhere. But, I don't know the lingo to describe things to sell them. So I guess I'm looking for best places to place these items (would take the art to a gallery/dealer if I could find one who takes this kind of misc. stuff), and resources for how to do it best to maximize the desperately needed dollars. tttttia

For the books:
Amazon.com
abebooks.com
alibris.com
The selling is faster and easier than eBAY. I use ABE when I need pricing guidance (if Amazon has no comparables), and sell on Amazon.
If you can determine asking prices on the art, you can try craigslist. People will pay $1000 + for craigslist items. Just be aware of the scammers who will offer to pay by certified check.

Thanks so much! I was giving up on receiving any responses. I'm on my way out but will look at the links soon.
When I tried to find price ranges on the art, some of the info I wanted was available only by subscription. I might have to pony up, though it should be worth it. (if I still have any credit available . . .)
Thanks for the heads up about certified checks. I didn't know that would be different from a money order. But will probably only take Paypal, anyway.

With craigslist, you should accept local buyers (cash in hand) or long distance buyer (PayPal only!)
The "bank check" scam involves the buyer "accidentally" paying hundreds of dollars extra and asking you to refund the difference. You verify that the check has been deposited, ship the item, refund the extra dollars, then the bank bills you for the fraudulent bank check.
