Vaccines and Private Schools: What Are My Rights?

There have been several discussions on this, and I have read them in the archives. But the answers vary a lot by state, and I couldn't find answers to my specific concerns.

I am researching school options for DD, and a lot of the private Montessori schools are requiring a full vaccination record for admittance. I live in Idaho, which is a state allowing medical, religious, and philosophical exemptions.

I've searched different anti-vax sites and still can't find any specifics. DD is on a delayed/selective schedule. She is up to date on DTaP thus far. Does anybody know what my rights are? Is exemption still an option, even if I enroll her in a private school?

From what I understand is if it is truly private (no state/fed funds) than they have a right to require vaxes.

Have you called the school and asked if they have an exemption form? Sometimes they dont pony it up until asked, leading you to believe it is one way only.

I don't see anything in your state law specific to private schools, so they can reject you based on that, though most people I come across are not rejected from pvt school based on vax status.

I'd submit a religious exemption (there is one in my siggy), site the state law, and cross your fingers. Often, they are just trying to follow state law and do not know about or understand exemptions.

If they say no, also ask them if they are on the Dept of Agriculture food program. I imagine that would cover for Fed aid.

I actually toured a private school today for my 5 yr old and told the principal my vax concerns and he told me that he is glad to find someone else who doesn't vax!!!! I was beyond THRILLED!!! I think it just depends on the facility. I still need my state (IL) waiver and I always offer a yearly well dr check up!!!
