Average cost of homemade diapers?

Hi all,

I'm just venturing into the world of possibly sewing my own diapers.

I'm most likely going to buy the verybaby.com pattern. But, my question is this: for those of you who BUY your fabric (and don't use fabric you have laying around the house), what would you say is the average cost of ONE diaper? (AIO or pocket).

I'm trying to price out how much cheaper it would be for me to make my own AIOs and pockets, but I'm having a hard time. According to the verybaby.com site, their AIO pattern requires 3 5/8 yd PUL, and 24 yds cotton fabric to yield 12 large diapers. Looking at buying a cotton fabric around $3.50 yd, and PUL around $9/yd, that comes out to just under $10 per diaper. Isn't that still rather pricey? Am I not looking in the right spots to find reasonably priced fabric???

About $5 to $6 a piece on average, for me.

Which is using velcro to close BTW, not snaps.

The math in your post looked a little off, so I checked it and come out with $5 per diaper.

I rounded up to 4 yds of PUL, at $9 = 36
plus 24 yrds cotton at $3.50 = 84
Total $120 for 24 diapers
120/24 = $5.00

Did I get that right?

If so, then definitely cheaper than buying new!

Oh, if I can get 24 diapers out it, then yes, that is a HUGE difference! I was just going off of the verybaby.com AIO pattern that listed those quantities as only making 12 diapers. But, maybe I can stretch it to make more than that.

Well, either way, it will be cheaper than new. I was just trying to figure out about how much I would be saving be diaper in making my own.

Ooh, ok, I just went by what you said in your post - that it would yield 24 diapers.

Either way I imagine it would be cheaper.

About 5$ for me also.

If you want to lower your costs:
Plain white PUL from WAHMsupply ~6.95/yd
Suedecloth lining from JoAnn's using 50% off coupon = ~4.50 yard
Buy a full roll of Touchtape from VeryBaby and get 20% off
For pocktes, for your inserts you can probably find scrap fabric- I have used old cotton t-shirts, my husbands old boxers, old 100% cotton velvet curtains, etc etc. It all works great!
