CDing while out 1 Dipe an hour?

So a wise mama on another thread gave the estimate that you should take one dipe per hour plus one, for babies under a year.

I understand this is a rough estimate, but now I'm concerned about trips to family!

Should I send my mom a stash of prefolds (what we are planning on using) so I don't have to cart 10 or more diapers back and forth? I plan on being at moms about once a week, maybe more. This is her first grand-baby and I'm young (24) and still need my mommy's advice. (all you mamas with grown babies, we do still need you!)

I don't think my mom would have a problem doing dirty diapers on occasion, and I would probably start them for her before I left, she would just dry and fold them. Plus she is CD savvy, I was a CD baby.

I gave her some of the 'odd' outfits I got as 'hand-me-downs' from friends (one looks like a sailor suit) just in case because she has ZERO childrens clothing and even less male kids stuff It would only make sence to send some diapers too! I guess I just never thought about it.

what about MIL? She lives in an apartment and we probably won't be staying as long we have the traditional MIL/DIL relationship. Nothing bad, just uncomfortable.

FIL (MIL and FIL are separated) travels A LOT so I will probably just send 'sposies with him, or buy him a pack or whatever. He isn't equipped to have babies around for more then a few hours anyways. He lives in hotels pretty much.

What have you ladies done?

The estimates I've heard for CD quantities is about 8/day at the beginning. I really hope it's not 25/day, because if so, there is no way I have enough even with doing multiple laundry loads a day. You may not go through as many covers as diapers, however, but it depends on the kid.

When we go visiting, we plan on taking CDs along. My mom will be babysitting at some point, and she's offered to wash diapers for me. If my ILs freak out with the cloth ones, I can provide them with some disposables, but it shouldn't be necessary. The aio style I have are pretty easy, especially if htey are preloaded.

i dont think i ever kept that many dipes with me! my baby was NOT a pooper though so that could contribute. if i was going to say the grocery store the bank and maybe one other short errand...i might have 3 dipes with me.....but normally 3 is what i had in my bag when dd was smaller and i hardly ever used them all. (i usually keep one in there now that she is 2 and then i will throw in another if i think im gonna be gone awhile) the times that i would stay out longer and do more errands or extra things when dd was an infant would be on a random day when dd would fall asleep in her carseat and just sleep peacfully as i went around (something i could never plan on when she was that small) - i certainly wasnt waking her for a diaper change and it wasnt planned.

if i was going somewhere for the *day* i might have half a dozen pfs and an extra cover, i dont remember ever being in a pinch. i always had the mindset that a convenience store is usually a few miles away from anywhere an in a pickle i would just grab some sposies - but i never had to do that. how about keeping 3-4 pfs in your car for emergencies or even just buying one pack of sposies and dividing it among your car, mom, mil and fil? i bet he will grow out of them before you use them all!

i remember finding a random 7th gen sposie this past spring that was easily a size too small, we hardly ever use sposies maybe 4 packs her whole 2 yrs, i felt so bad that i was gonna have wasted it and never used it so i squeezed it on her....lol - i actually like the gdiaper inserts rather than traditional sposies. in a pickle they can be laid in any old cover and are easily half or less of the trash of a regular sposie and they biodegrade sooooooo much faster. that is if you are using pfs/fitteds and covers (they wouldnt work so well with a pull on i dont think).

If you are planning to be at your mom's quite a bit, then it wouldn't hurt to have a few diapers, some clothes, etc on hand to keep there. And I would also have a thing of your detergent there for her to use, too. I have been stuck at my mom's before without my special detergent for diapers, and it totally stunk!

As for being out during the day, I don't think you need to actually carry that much on your person. I used to keep a larger bag in the car with a few diapers, a couple changes of clothing, extra sweater, etc and that just stayed there as my "just in case" bag. I would carry a couple diapers, the changing pad, and a couple wipes with me in my purse so that I didn't have to carry a diaper bag. Or, I would use the sling I had him in as the changing pad. Mei Tai's are great for this!
