Critique my list for newbie (includes prices)

Everything is from this website: http://nickisdiapers.com

Basically I would like to use prefolds with newborn to 3 months, but intermix with pockets and eventually switch to pockets. DH is with me on cloth diapering, but I think he'll prefer pockets over prefolds. I also like that we'll be able to use the prefolds for inserts, and burp cloths, or wipes. I take it we won't need inserts and doublers with this list?

Okay... here it goes, please help me get this list just right:

Pre-Folds:
(1) Babies Textile Newborn Prefolds (2x5x2) – Dozen - $14.50
(1) Chinese Prefold Diaper - Standard Infant (4x6x4) – Dozen - $16
(1) Chinese Prefold Diaper - Infant (4x8x4) – Dozen - $18
(2) Bummis Flushable Bio-Liners Small - $6/ea – small or large?
Total: $60.50

Covers:
(2 x-small) Thirsties Diaper Covers - $11.25/ea
(2 small) Thirsties Diaper Covers - $11.25/ea
Should I look at buying Snaps or Velcro Bummis covers?
(1) Bummis Super Whisper Wrap - Newborn $11/ea
(1) Bummis Super Whisper Wrap – small - $11/ea
Total: $67

Pocket Diapers: (Not sure about the amount I have on this list)
(3) Kissaluvs Fitted Diaper – size 0 - $13.95
bumGenius 3.0 One Size Pocket Diaper - $203.40 - dozen
(3) Thirsties Pocket AIO – small - $15.75
(3) Thirsties Pocket AIO – medium - $15.75
Total: $339.75

Misc.
Cotton Babies Flannel Wipes - 12 pack - $12.95
Flannel Baby Wipes 15 pack - $8.50
Weleda Calendula Baby Oil - $12.95
Snappi Diaper Fastener - 3 pack - $6.50
Total: $40.90

Total: $508.15

I haven't cd yet, but thought I'd go ahead and point out some things. First, you only have 3 nb covers, and that just doesn't seem like enough. Plus, thirsties are WAY bigger than other nb covers and sometimes are too big right away (unless you have a huge baby). I would consider getting a few more. Also, you know that fitteds are not pockets, right? The 3 KL0 will require a cover. And I know people like to have about 3 doz wipes, in a variety of fabrics (but some use just flannel so it's not necessary. I got some cheap wahm bamboo velour wipes, and just so you know, most people hate the cottonbabies wipes). You don't have any xs pockets, but if you want to get some, most don't like them because they are so hard to stuff. They use xs aios instead.

Also, unless money is not a factor at all, I would (and did) look for good deals on diaperswappers rather not just buying everything from one store. I've saved tons of money and gotten a variety of diapers both new and hardly used. People often post when stores are going out of business and have sales, or buy a dipe new and then decide they don't want it and sell it for several dollars cheaper (but still brand new). This is a great thread on cding a newborn. GL and I hth!

Thank you for the reply! That's just what I was looking for

So I'll add a few more nb covers - 6 good?

I put KLO's in the wrong category; those are for DH, but I did forget that they would need a cover! Not really planning to use them, just thought I'd try them out and I know DH would prefer something easy. Maybe I need a few more.

So no to cotton wipes. I plan on making some more wipes from old towels, material, etc., just wanted to get some already made. So I'll get 2 Doz. Flannel wipes (plus what I make).

Need xs-pockets... which brand? (I sort of hate asking that because everyone has what works for them, so which of these: BG, Bummis or Imse Vimse? Or mixture?)

I do plan on shopping a lot of different places for the best price. I like to get a price list to work from, and then shop elsewhere for deals, then I know how much I save!

This is so confusing...

Your list is good.

If I were shopping I would change it up a little.

Unless I was expecting a very small baby I would skip the newborn prefolds and just get the next size. In three weeks they will be into the next size.

I would make sure I have a minimum of no less than 4-5 covers in the size needed. 6 is usually the norm, but you can get away with 4-5 at a minimum if needed, just remember to hand wash and hang in a place that will dry quickly. Personally these are my fav. covers --- They are great and have been around with great success since the 80's. Here is a visual example that is pretty good:
http://www.babyworks.com/catalog/dep...FQrFGgodk3Hz0g, but I have found the pricing is better here. http://naturalbaby.stores.yahoo.net/afnikdiapcov.html They are awesome breathable covers for a couple dollars more.

My self I would skip the flushable liners. I found them cumbersome and never ended up bothering with them.

Unless you are pressed for time, you may be able to shop around for some good Pocket deals without placing a lump sum order for them at one location. Often times you can end up with a nice variety to get a better feel of what works best for your particular baby for a little less money. Later you might want a wet bag as well.

eta: if your using aplix/velcro appliances you may want to avoid towel/terry materials -- they lint and will clutter up your closure tabs. The flannel would be a less annoying chioce in my opinion. If you can make your own wipes I would skip buying them all together.

Good Luck, looks like you have a great lineup.

One thing I noticed is that the newborn prefolds at Nicki's Diapers are the same size as the infant (12x16) they just have fewer layers. Not sure if that changes your mind one way or the other, but I wanted to point it out.

Here is a good link to see the size difference in a few covers (scroll about halfway down). See how tiny the bummis super brite is compared to the thirsties? so cute. I have bsb, bsww, thirsties, and proraps for the newborn stage (just 1 or 2 of each). Also, I don't know of nb pockets (I think some like the fuzzibunz xs), but bg only makes aio that are sized (their pocket is a onesize). People do really like the xs though. A few other nb aio brands I've heard are popular are verybaby, nana's bottoms, and thirsties (they have a pocket for extra stuffing).

Thank you!

This really is so confusing... if only there weren't so many brands and styles, but I guess that's a good thing.

Ola_ thank you, I hadn't noticed that about the sizes. I'll go with GMD prefolds.

notyetamommy our babies are due about the same time! Luckily I have time to sort this out. Thanks for the link, the pictures were really helpful.

Ifluffedthree, a friend also recommended the Nikky covers but I couldn't remember where to get them. Thanks for the links.

I think I'm going to have to revamp my list because I was watching a video on Youtube about Kissaluvs and Thirsties: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr_TqJymRNA They make it look easy so I think I'm going to buy more of those! I love the idea of the velcro on the changing table for the covers.

I think you have been given some good advice already. I just want to add that I would skip the flush liners as well. You could make some fleece liners yourself or buy some. I like to use them when I use PFs. They are also good if you ever have to use a non CD friendly cream.
