Tie Dying

Anyone here do tie dying? I would love to tie dye a thermal baby blanket and some white onsies for the arrival of our first LO due in June. I have seen kits at the craft store that were fairly inexpensive and I have also looked at dyes at Dharma Trading Co. I am just not sure which way to go. Also, I would like to do a baby blue color and was wondering if I got a kit with blue in it, if I could lighten the color at all (instead of it being a royal blue)? Or if for a baby blue, I would need to get that lighter blue seperatly?

We do some tie dyeing. I would suggest the dyes over the kit, because you can get more for your money. Just grab some rubberbands, and google tie dye instructions and you're good to go.

You can get a lighter blue by watering down the dye a bit more.

Make sure anything you dye is 100% cotton - it will take the dye better than anything else (except perhaps rayon, but that isn't exactly baby-wear!)

You can use RIT, but it fades. If you want something that will stay the color you dye it, you'll need a fiber reactive dye, which RIT is not (unless they've changed their formulas since I last used one).

If you have a good craft section at your local Walmart, they might have it. I've had better luck finding it at art supply stores. This is the sort of thing you're looking for: http://www.dickblick.com/products/pr...old-water-dye/
