Pregnant with a cold

Thread Starter
I'm new and just found out I'm pregnant with my second. I haven't found a good pregnancy book yet and my husband brought home a cold from work. Was kind enough to share it with all of us. When I was pregnant with my 1st, I didn't have a single cold or virus and someone told me that it was "dangerous" to the baby if I got any type of infection in my 1st trimester. Is this true? Are there any risks to my 3 week embryo if I get a cold? Does the embryo get sick too or are they protected? Sorry for the lame question. I haven't seen my midwife yet and I'm a little bit worried. Don't plan on taking any medications. If I spike a fever, is it safe to take Tylonol?

Thanks

I think you accidently posted this in the wrong DDC! This the November 2008 thread and you need the November 2009 thread. A cold in the first trimester is not dangerous to the baby. There are some viruses that if you haven't been exposed to them before and have no immunity (primary infection) can harm an embryo, but that is rare so I wouldn't worry. Tylenol is safe if you are uncomfortable with a fever. Congratulations and sorry about the cold. It may linger on a little longer than colds do normally because of your pregnancy. A good pregnancy book, IMO, is Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn by Penny Simkin and The Pregnancy Book by William Sears. Good luck with your pregnancy!

You're right! I did post in the wrong spot. Oopse....Thank you so much for posting though! I think this is just a regular cold so I should be fine just like you said. I'll definitely look into those books that you recommended.

Thanks again!

There are, I think, 2 types of Sudafed you can take and Tylenol. That's about it during pregnancy. You can double check that online though.
