Splicing/joining bulky acrylic?

I have some bulky acrylic yarn that I got from my grandmother - I love the colors and am trying to make a throw rug/play mat with it. The problem I'm running into is that it's in pieces. I was wondering why at first, but when I bought a skein to match (since I didn't have enough), I discovered that's the way the skein comes. Several shorter pieces instead of one long one. : Some of these pieces are quite short (less than 3 feet). Is there a way to splice/join a yarn this thick without having huge unsightly bulges in it? Putting a join every few inches in the piece is getting pretty messy.

Honestly? I'd tie knots and do my damnedest to make it a design feature. Knotted rugs, after all, are not in the slightest bit unusual.

what yarn is this? I've never, ever known a yarn to come like that.

You generally need at least some wool in a yarn to be able to splice it.

That's sloppily manufactured yarn.

If it's multiply, cut a few of the plies about 3-4" from the end of each piece, and do a Russian join:

Lion brand Thick and Chunky I believe is what it's called. Ball band is gone.
