Did anyone see this? I think it was last Fridays show when she has the panel with Gayle a couple other people, George Stephanoupolis's wife is one of them. Anyway they showed to picture of Salma Hayek nursing the baby in (drawing a blank here). They all had really positive things to say, Stephanopoulis is obviously a lactivist, commented about wet nurses being around forever and that is was nice to see someone using their boobs for their intended purpose.

There was a great opinion piece in the Chicago Tribune yesterday about her.

That was a nice piece. Though I wonder why it was important to point out that the Hayek pic had "no nipple showing" .

When I was watching the show and this topic came up, I was bracing myself for negative comments and was pleasantly surprised at the great things that were said. I think Salma Hayek is a lovely woman and I'm glad that she could help that poor hungry baby!

I don't get the deal with it mattering that her daughter is weaning now anyways, so she didn't have to feel like it was taking away from her. It's not like one nursing session with a small infant is going to rob a toddler of its food (like her breasts only make X ounces a day...).

But that is my only real "thing" with what they were talking about. I was surprised and happy too with what they had to say/showed for the most part.

I kinda get it, maybe not so much that it's robbing her babe of milk but that it's a bond that a lot of moms feel is between only them and their babe. I don't know what I'd do in that case, but part of me would feel like maybe I was pushing my own loyalties to my DD...if that makes any sense.

That's true, nursing is a pretty exclusive relationship in our culture. I can see what you are saying. I don't agree that it is pushing anything on her DD any more than almost any other parenting choice we have to make, but I do agree that it is influencing her DD with her loyalties.

My concern would be with her smoking. I think she continues to smoke and that's a drug in the milk the baby wouldn't be used to. If she does smoke she would not be allowed to donate milk.

Her own baby would be used to the chemicals from her smoking. The benefits of her smoking outweigh the risks.

I am so glad that Selma did what she did when she did it! My DH and I talked about it, and my dh was not sure about it at first. But, after talking about it he thought it was pretty cool. Fast forward a week, and my friend needs milk for her baby. So, dh is totally supportive and cool with me pumping for my friend.

I was so happy that this was seen and that the response hasn't been really negative. I feed my son donor milk and have over 5 months (he's currently 7 months) and it's great to see milksharing/cross nursing out in public. It has definately changed people's perception when they find out how I feed my DS.
