So in talking to one of my bosses today, who is the Chief Medical Officer for our organization, I think I increased his knowledge about breastfeeding about a hundredfold in a matter of five minutes ;-). Great, but also, pathetic.
So does anyone have any links or cites for good articles aimed at providers to give them the basics on breastfeeding? About half our business is homeless health, where we (fortunately?) see few pregnant women or women with young babies, but our two next-largest clinics see about 30% pediatric patients and we're trying to build our prenatal program... so there's a definite need, which we hope will grow.
I have a back-burner plan to write a grant for a lactation consultant, first-year salary, since we can bill services to CPSP (Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program) as we build our client base... but it'll help if our CMO isn't totally baffled by the notion that someone might need to be taught how to nurse. (I think he gets it now... but there's a lot more to it, of course!)
