Saturday night I notice something is wrong with my 2 yr olds smile and sure enough, one of her canines is shattered almost to the gum. Other canine didn't look right but thought maybe I was misremembering it. Its hard to get a good look in her mouth but what I saw after holding her down was not pretty. I got her into the dentist today, she FREAKED when they tried doing xrays, she didn't want anything near her mouth. We had to hold her down just to look in her mouth and do a visual Just based on the visual they HOPE they can save the front 2 teeth, the 2 top canines are shattered beyond repair and need to come out. She's got serious cavities in her molars on both sides and may lose those teeth as well. We didn't get a good look at the bottom teeth but she's complaining of pain there which is one of the things that alerted me to a bigger problem. Anyway, due to a health issue they can not sedate her in the office and it has to be done in a hospital with her hooked up to IV's, she can not fast period due to blood sugar issues which is why they need the IVs to give straight dextrose while she's under and recovering. On a good calm day she can fast up to 3 hours, being under stress and healing from an extraction is going to put her at about an hour for fasting limits for at least a week if not more while she heals (healing stresses the body) so my questions are:

When will she be able to nurse again? I'm thinking the suction created while nursing might be a problem? I cringe thinking she might get a dry socket but weaning is not an option.

How will she be able to eat if they have to remove 4-6 top teeth at least? (who knows whats going on with the bottom teeth!) She has low tone in her mouth so her tongue is not that much use to her. Were still working on learning how to use her tongue, forget using it to help smash up soft food in her mouth. Not being able to eat can be deadly quickly for her so I'm trying to get answers and have some ideas before I call the hospital tomorrow.

Before someone makes judgments, yes I take care of her teeth, her syndrome causes ossification defects which means her bones (including teeth) may not be as hard as they should be which leads to rapid tooth decay, 6 months ago her teeth were fine and now this!
