She's Fully On the Charts Now

If you've been on this forum for a while, you may remember the wonderfully informative but somewhat controversial thread about my foster daughter's lack of weight gain (but an increase in height and clothing size.) It was the whole "how do I avoid this Carnation Instant Breakfast crap that my fd is now addicted to but still achieve the desired results" thread. She had stayed at 19 pounds for seven months even though she was eating well and growing.

It's now eight months later, and Polliwog is fully on the charts. She's been back to eating up a storm for the past six months or so. She had her two-year-old well child visit, yesterday, and the doctor is so happy. She's now 32.5" inches tall (about the 10th percentile) and 23 pounds (about the 10th percentile.) So, she's a peanut but that's to be expected. Both of her parents are very short.

I still think it's odd that a four pound weight gain ups the percentiles so much, but I'll take it. I want to thank everyone who helped me find yummy stuff to add additional calories that weren't full of chemicals OR sugar-laden foods that she didn't need to be having yet. The organic toddler formula (in the beginning,) kefir (which is now a family favorite) and other foods really helped to do the trick.

Thats good news! i remember that thread!

Keegan is one year old (almost 13 months) and weighs about 25 pounds.

today we were out to eat and a lady asked me if he was two years old!

Its like you're damned if you do and if you don't. Dr gave me grief because he was "too big" and yours was worried because she was "too little"....but whats the fun in being average??!!

So, uh...what is kefir exactly? I saw that in the store a few weeks ago and actually thought of your other thread if you can believe that. I think i was thinking "isnt that the stuff recommended for beth's dfd to gain weight? Does that mean its fattening and we shouldnt get it??"

Yeah, I am so glad she is back on the chart. We are battling and have always been battling the on the chart thing for weight for my now 5 year old. She is 30lbs. What is kefir? I need to know more. We have tried everything else. She is way off the chart for weight but maintains at height (15th%) and head. The even lower dip in weigh recently has made us a bit more worried lately.

Kefir is great stuff. It's very healthy and tastes great. We get ours at the supermarket or Trader Joes but if I ever get time, I'd like to try making it myself. It's more like a liquidy yogurt.

I think it was recommended because it's so healthy and tastes great without a ton of extra sugar and other junk. And, at the time, Polliwog was only wanting to drink liquids (just thinking about her hunger strike makes my skin crawl) and this was a great alternative.

Here's a link to the info from one manufacturer. There's a ton more info on the web but this answered a lot of my questions. http://www.lifeway.net/

(My computer's acting up, so sorry for any formatting errors.)

I was searching for another thread and found this one that I wrote a little over two years ago. After reading it, I decided that it's time for an update.

First of all, most of you know that my foster daughter is officially my daughter. She went for her four-year-old checkup in February and was 37.75" and 27lbs. Still a peanut.  Well, we had to get her eyes checked the other day and I asked that she be measured and weighted. She's now a whopping (for her) 38.75 inches and 33 pounds. She's NEVER had a growth spurt like that. For a bit, it really scared me but then I realized that even though she's had this spurt, she's still a tiny four-year-old. But, not short on spunk.

Five pounds in 2 1/2 months. No wonder all of her clothes (especially her new swimsuits) are getting snug.

Aww!!  My former dfd went through a big spurt too.  When she left in December, she was 24# and 36".  By May (this month), she's 28# and 38" (according to her mom).  That's big for her, because she's never seen such a large growth in such a small span of time!  I'm glad Polliwog is doing great!  And good luck on the clothes front.... winky.gif

You know, I read the OP in this thread not realizing it was 2yo and thought "OH!!! I REMEMBER that Carnation thread!  Geesh!!!"  biggrinbounce.gif

Yes... I'm SURE she is NOT short on spunk!
